  Gamelan Degung

 Deep Down Productions - Articles - Gamelan - Gamelan-Degung
Degung developed in the small courts of Sunda and, to the present day, it is associated in the minds of the Sundanese with aristocratic rituals and traditions.
Its present instrumentation, with goong (a large hanging gong) and suling degung (a 4-hole bamboo flute which plays a prominent role in degung) is attributed to Pa Idi and colleagues of his generation, who began to be active around 1920.
Degung's core repertoire consists of roughly 60 pieces, many of which are closely linked through characteristic melodic (particularly cadential) and rhythmic patterns.

  Gamelan degung at AllExperts
Gamelan Degung is a Sundanese musical ensemble that utilises a subset of modified gamelan instruments with a particular mode of pelog scale.
In classical degung, bonang conducts the whole ensemble and is therefore rarely absent, except in certain modern compositions.
With a slight modification from Javanese one, bonang in gamelan degung is composed of two rows of seven horizontal bulbous gongs, each row is placed at the left- and right side of its player.

 gamelan degung
For the Sundanese, gamelan degung is an important expression of their cultural identity, quite different from the gamelan traditions of Java and Bali (which are perhaps better known overseas).
Gamelan degung emerged during the 19th century in the courts of the Sundanese regents, who ruled under the Dutch colonial regime.
Gamelan degung is tuned to a pentatonic scale, pelog degung, which approximates to the pitches Ab G Eb Db C. Some pieces use the sorog tuning: Ab G F Db C. The tuning is changed by exchanging the appropriate bars or gong chimes on each instrument.
