Titled the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum is one of the principal documents of the Second Vatican Council.
Approved by the assembled bishops by a vote of 2,344 to 6, this document was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on November 18, 1965.
'Dei Verbum' is Latin for 'word of God' and is, as is customary for major Catholic documents, from the first line of the document.

As Dei Verbum says, "for, of course, all that has been said about the manner of interpreting Scripture is ultimately subject to the judgment of the Church which exercises the divinely conferred commission and ministry of watching over and interpreting the Word of God" (n.

DEI VERBUM AND CHRISTIAN MORALS - Fr. Benedict Ashley, O.P. - Catholic Dossier - Jan/Feb 2000
Dei Verbum is very careful in its declaration of the inerrancy of Scripture to make clear that this does not mean that the true and inspired sense of the Bible can be ascertained by a fundamentalist literalism or merely subjective interpretation.
Dei Verbum responds to this question by emphasizing that the Bible must always be read in the context of the Church’s teaching, i.e., its living Sacred Tradition that today takes account of modern biblical scholarship.
Thus Dei Verbum, in reaffirming for our own times and circumstances the divine, inerrant inspiration of the Bible as it is united to the living Tradition of the Church guided by the Holy Spirit, points the way to the solution of the many moral questions that confront us in our society today.

Analysis of Dei Verbum 11:18,19: A look at Biblical Inerrancy...by Matt1618
These critiques of Dei Verbum show that he has a presumption against the supernatural, and an intention to make events that are presented in a historical manner into metaphors and symbols.
Dei Verbum does acknowledge that there was a three step process in arriving at the written word: 1) from the times of the events of the gospel; 2) to an oral tradition based on those events; 3) ultimately the written account of those events.
Dei Verbum is a strong call to faith in the veracity of the Bible.

If Dei Verbum has brought about a fresh understanding of the nature of revelation, and a new awareness of the centrality of Scripture in Catholic life, practice and spirituality, Lumen Gentium has prompted a greater measure of participation and involvement in the life of the Church, especially on the part of the lay faithful.
Dei Verbum provides a theology of God's revelation; Lumen Gentium, a theology of the Church.
The achievement of Dei Verbum is, in part, in the corrective it offered to such an approach by providing an understanding of revelation itself.

But apparently that all depends on which Verbum Dei Eagles team shows up: If it's the one that Head Coach Kenneth (KC) Curry and his assistants Tony Thomas, Ray Hooper and Derek Cross have in mind when they run practices and coach games, then they're likely to be pretty good, maybe even downright scary.
The final score was Verbum Dei 74, Gardena 50, but at times it didn't seem even that close.
And before we get to describing Verbum Dei, keep in mind that Gardena is not a bad team overall, they just look like they haven't been playing together long and lack some fundamentals, and in that sense, it was really easy for the one player on their team we liked to stand out.

Moreover, Dei Verbum deliberately disregarded the question of the order of the Gospels and the problems posed by literary criticism; and it had nothing to say as to how, when and where the apostles committed their preaching to writing, thus making allowance for a broader interpretation of the notion of authorship.
According to Lyonnet, the Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum (18 November 1965) is the first Church document that does not touch at all the question of the authors of the biblical books.

Like most of the sixteen documents, Dei Verbum was carefully, even hotly, considered, but in many ways the subject of Revelation was exceptional, being fundamental to Vatican II in several respects.
Dei Verbum contained a preface and six chapters: Revelation itself; the Transmission of Revelation; Inspiration and Interpretation of Scripture; the Old Testament; the New Testament; and Scripture in the Life of the Church.
Apart from the significance of the subject itself, one other important aspect was that at an early date, after an indecisive vote, the ‘preparatory’ schema: De fontibus Revelationis, as presented to the Fathers, was withdrawn on the instruction of Pope John.

LT59 - THE TRUTH AND SALVIFIC PURPOSE OF SACRED SCRIPTURE ACCORDING TO DEI VERBUM, ARTICLE 11
The earlier drafts of Dei Verbum contained a shorter formulation which simply affirmed the Bible to be "completely free of all error" (second draft) or that it "teaches the truth without any error" (third draft).
The true sense of Dei Verbum, 11, then, is not that the guarantee of inerrancy covers those propositions which a biblical author affirms (or teaches) as opposed to those which he merely "states," i.e., with less force or deliberation, but still as an expression of his own judgment.
The teaching of Vatican Council II in Dei Verbum, 11, is thus in complete harmony with the traditional Catholic understanding of the revealed truth that the books of Scripture are inspired by God and free from all error.
