		Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are small and oddly-shaped, and possibly captured asteroids.
		Mars has two tiny natural moons, Phobos and Deimos, which orbit very close to the planet and are thought to be captured asteroids.
		Both satellites were discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall, and are named after the characters Phobos (panic/fear) and Deimos (terror/dread) who, in Greek mythology, accompanied their father Ares, god of war, into battle.

		The moon Phobos appears about one third the angular diameter that the full Moon appears from Earth, and when it is full it is bright enough to cast shadows.
		There are also transits of Mercury and transits of Venus, and the moon Deimos is of sufficiently small angular diameter that its partial "eclipses" of the Sun are best considered transits (see Transit of Deimos from Mars).
		Mars (and its moons) were also the setting for the popular Doom video game franchise and the later Martian Gothic (Martian Gothic: Unification).

		Although the Moon and the stars have been celestial Rorschach tests for millennia, it was with the invention of the telescope that it became very apparent that some other planets were essentially Earthlike objects -- something especially apparent for the Moon.
		The Moon's craters resemble scaled-up versions of laboratory-produced impact craters and bomb craters, and their continuous size distribution and random scatter are consistent with an essentially random population of impactors.
		Mars's other moon Deimos has a similar appearance and a slightly-smaller density, and the four asteroids flown by to date (243 Ida, 951 Gaspra, 253 Mathilde, and 433 Eros) are likewise similar.
