Dromaeosauridae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dromaeosaurids are theropods, and may be the sister taxon to Avialae (birds and proto-birds).
Dromaeosauridae is a subgroup of Deinonychosauria, and includes such animals as Deinonychus, Dromaeosaurus, Velociraptor, Saurornitholestes, and Utahraptor.
Dromaeosauridae is sometimes seen as synonymous to Deinonychosauria, when Troodontidae is placed in less derived maniraptorans.

Deinonychosauria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Deinonychosauria ("fearsome claws") were a successful clade of theropods in the Cretaceous period.
These carnivores are known for their switchblade-like second toes.
By some definitions, Deinonychosauria and Dromaeosauridae are synonyms.

 Deinonychosauria [The Dinosauricon]
The most striking feature of the Deinonychosauria was the large second pedal ungual, which was highly mobile and could swing back and forth, thus giving it the nickname "switchblade claw" or "sickle claw".
Similar claws were present on the feet of other basal Paraves, as well as Troodontidae (which may very well belong to Paraves) and Noasaurus leali (although the latter's was not as similar, and evolved convergently).
Troodontidae were once included in Deinonychosauria because of their "sickle claws", but they may not belong.

They have also been called the “Sickle-Clawed Killers” and were given this name due to the razor sharp claws on their feet.
It is the largest of the Deinonychosauria other species such as the Velociraptor, Pyroraptor and Bambiraptor.

Classifiction of the torrent raptors is hampered by the fact that they are derived from a branch of Deinonychosauria far removed from any living group and isolated for 50 million years, and by their adaptation to a unique lifestyle.
The 70 cm long torrent raptor is an aberrant maniraptoran associated with fast flowing mountain streams along the length of the Andes.
DNA studies suggest that its direct ancestors diverged from the the rest of the Deinonychosauria as far back as the Middle Jurassic.

In its first formulation, Deinonychosauria is defined as a node-based taxon consisting of 'Troodon, Velociraptor, their most recent common ancestor and all descendants'.

As shown in the theropod-bird example, point (1) is illustrated by the fact that Sereno (1998) is explicit in his definition of Deinonychosauria, while Padian and colleagues (1999) are equally explicit in theirs, but the two definitions do not coincide.

A reply to Ashby Camp and TrueOrigins on Avian Phylogeny - EvoWiki
In a curious passage in his review, Camp asserts that as the most basal Deinonychosauria, e.g., Sinornithosaurus millenii and Microraptor gui, are more conspicuously birdlike than derived Deinonychosauria, such as Velociraptorinae, it follows that theropod origin is an “ad hoc” hypothesis and of questionable validity.
As basal Deinonychosauria will be closer to the common ancestry of Eumaniraptora, and furthermore closer to the urvogel in phylogenetic terms, it is only to be expected that the most basal Deinonychosauria will most closely resemble basal avians.
Basal Deinonychosauria display classic signs of increased arboreal locomotion in the elongation of the distal pedal phalanges at the expense of the proximal phalanges, the dorsoventral excursion of the glenoid fossa, elongation of the forelimbs, and perhaps even the classical, functionally didactyl pes of deinonychosaurs (Chatterjee 1997, Paul 2002).

Troodontidae is one of the rarest groups, they are of small size with long hindlimbs and the largest relative brain size of all dinosaurs.

Note: some studies place troodontids and dromaeosaurids together in Deinonychosauria; others put dromaeosaurids closer to birds; still others put troodontids closer to birds.
Nevertheless, it is within the maniraptoran coelurosaurs that the birds arose.

In addition, until recently there had been no good basal troodontid remains known, hindering comparisons.
With the discovery of Sinovenator, however, Troodontidae seems to mesh with Dromaeosauridae in Deinonychosauria, just as in the early 1980s.
For a long time, this family was known as Saurornithoididae, because Troodon was thought to be a dubious pachycephalosaurid.

Maniraptora is the sister group to Arctometatarsalia and together with it makes up Maniraptoriformes.
It has three main groups: Deinonychosauria, including Dromaeosauridae, or "raptors", and the gracile Troodontidae; a possible group comprised of Oviraptorosauria (Caenagnathidae, Oviraptoridae, and ?Avimimidae), and Therizinosauria; and Avialae.
Feathers or protofeathers are known for deinonychosaurians, basal oviraptorosaurians, basal therizinosaurians, and avialans (this one is easily verified), suggesting all maniraptorans possessed one or the other.

Novas, the Argentine paleontologist, said evidence that deinonychosaurs and related theropods were present in the Southern Hemisphere during Cretaceous period is allowing paleontologists to "reinterpret the evolutionary history of predatory dinosaurs."

The Deinonychosauria plus the Avialae comprise the Maniraptora, which we shall look at in the next lectures.
