Son of Vaso and Milka Bodiroga, Dejan is a devout Orthodox Christian.
Dejan's professional career began in earnest when at the tender age of 17 he was noticed by the former Yugoslav great Kresimir Cosic who persuaded Bodiroga's family to allow their son to move away to Zadar.
Bodiroga was to be the final piece of the jigsaw that already included Dino Radja, Fragiskos Alvertis and coach Slobodan Subotic.
