 The Del Close Messages
Del especially enjoyed the work of so-called non-performers, people without any stage training who may have seemed awkward to others but were prized by Del for their freshness, their insights, their freedom of being themselves.
Del taught me to play form the top of my intelligence; to bring my own passions, opinions, and knowledge to any improvisation; and to look at a scene in my own, skewed way without being concerned whether I was "right" or not.
Del's death is a tremendous loss to all of us, but after the sadness passes, remember that we celebrate Del and his life work every time we take the stage.

 Tribute to Del Close
Close’s real life was indeed the stuff of comic books, a real-life Forest Gump adventure.  He was born in Kansas, where his cousin’s  cousin--General Dwight Eisenhower--came over for Thanksgiving dinner.
Del joined the Compass Players--the precursors to Second City--when he was 22 years old, largely because he was a friend of Severn Darden.
Del was an important figure in the ‘60s counterculture around Chicago and San Francisco (the bizarre but true story about the time he went roller-skating through the sewers of Chicago with a flashlight strapped to his head, shooting rats, is related in the first issue of Wasteland).

CHICAGO, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The executor of comedian Del Close's will has come clean, admitting that the human skull sitting in Chicago's Goodman Theatre is not the improv legends'.
Close willed his skull to the theater before he died in 1999 and Charna Halpern maintained for seven years that the skull she donated was in fact his, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.
She even stuck to her story during the newspaper's investigation in July as to whether or not the skull actually belonged to Close, a director of the "Second City" and other improvisation theaters.

 Del Close
Del Close was one of the early performers and directors who helped create the venerated Second City improvisational comedy troup in Chicago.
The name of Del's textbook was "Truth In Comedy." Convinced of an abiding and inherent human compassion, he taught that your richest, finest connection with an audience comes not when you go for an easy joke, but when you mine the deepest parts of your soul, wrestle with your emotions, and speak with total candor.
Del would rather see you work through a half-dozen honest moments -- even uncomfortable ones, which are often still amusing as hell -- for one insightful laugh than get a score of Shecky laughs.
