Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has announced the selection of Martin Collins Surfaces and Footings and its Polytrack surface as the new main track surface for its 2007 summer racing season.
Del Mar's engineering and installation plans for Polytrack have received the support of the city of Del Mar and the 22nd District Agricultural Association, the body that oversees the 350-acre, state-owned fairgrounds on which the track sits.
Del Mar's 68th racing season is scheduled from July 18 to Sept. 5, 2007.

Del Mar, where the surf meets the turf, is the premier summer race meet in California.
Del Mar had to close from December of 1941 due to World War II, and didn't reopen until July of 1945.
Especially interesting here are photos of Del Mar flooded in 1980, the infamous guy who ran on the track, Cigar going down in defeat to Dare and Go, and the trio of great jockeys John Longden, Bill Shoemaker, and Laffit Pincay with the plaques that were dedicated in their honor.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club ended its 63rd summer season of Thoroughbred racing Sept. 11 by maintaining its position as the national leader in daily average attendance for the twelfth consecutive year, while achieving a new track record for total pari-mutuel handle.
In spite of a shift in racing dates resulting in Del Mar running a full week after the Labor Day holiday, on-track attendance of 667,280 in 2002 exceeded the total of 664,594 in 2001, when Del Mar's meeting ended on the first Wednesday after Labor Day.
On-track attendance averaged 15,518, up 0.4 percent, while off-track crowds at Del Mar's 16 satellites totaled 556,471 for a daily average of 12,941, a decrease of 5 percent from a year ago.
