McCoury began listening to Bill Monroe's music religiously, but when he heard Flat and Scruggs "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms," he was introduced to Earl Scruggs' innovative three-finger banjo style and decided his future lay with the banjo.
In the '80s, McCoury's sons began playing with him, having picked up instruments early in life, and by the early '90s, when both were finished school, McCoury and his sons could concentrate on the band with more energy.
In the past few years, The Del McCoury Band has been stockpiling awards, including the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) Entertainers of the Year for 1994 and 1996, and in 1996 they were also presented with the Group of the Year award.

The Music Box: Del McCoury Band - Del and the Boys
In fact, there are times throughout Del and the Boys when his fluid riffs sound like the direct descendent of the Grateful Dead’s lead guitarist Jerry Garcia.
This undoubtedly is a product of McCoury’s association with fellow mandolin player and long-time Garcia cohort David Grisman, but what’s interesting is the way in which McCoury digests Garcia’s style and incorporates it into his own musical dialogue.
But with Del and the Boys, the Del McCoury Band has created an album firmly entrenched in the traditions of bluegrass, yet full of the bold explorations, Technicolor textures, and high-spirited flights for which most improvisational outfits strive.

McCoury fell for Scruggs' energized banjo picking when he was about 11, first on the Grand Ole Opry and then on a 78 RPM recording of Rolling in my Sweet Baby's Arms that his older brother brought home.
McCoury also learned guitar from his brother, but after the Scruggs epiphany, all he wanted to do was play banjo.
With the album Blue Side of Town that same year, McCoury's music took a progressive, eclectic turn, with a song by country maverick Steve Earle, the rock and roll classic That's Alright Mama, and the title track, a hit for Patty Loveless.

All hyperbole aside, The Del McCoury Band is the best working bluegrass group in the land right now, and it could be argued that their final resting place in bluegrass history will be alongside Scruggs, Stanley and Grisman, who all had the ability to honor the music's traditions while expanding on its possibilities.
