In this isolated northwest corner of California, Del Norte County was organized in 1857, shortly after Crescent City, the county seat, was settled.
Highway 101 parallels the coast through Del Norte County, and U. Highway 199 starts at Crescent City, heading northeast into the mountains, and into Oregon.
Redwood National Park, home of the world's tallest trees, is perched on the mountainside south of Crescent City, where the abundant ocean moisture provides the conditions needed by these trees.

 DEL NORTE PESTICIDE STORAGE
Approximately 1,600 drums that had held the wastes and rinse water were recovered and recycled by the County Agricultural Department.
An air stripping groundwater treatment system was built in 1989 and has been successfully stripping the pesticide DCP from the groundwater prior to discharge to the municipal waste treatment system.
The Del Norte Site was deleted from the National Priorities List on September 18, 2002.
