Del Rio lies at the southwestern corner of the Edwards Plateau, the western fringe of the Texas Hill Country.

Paul Kallinger remained on the Texas side of the border and recorded his spots at a studio in Del Rio, because he did not want to become embroiled with the lawlessness that swirled around the XERF studio and transmitter on the other side of the border.
Another group that was also based in North Texas who were aware of the Bill Mack venture on XERF and the replacement of his time slot by the Texas Night Train were the owners of a company attempting to revive the British offshore station Wonderful Radio London.
After concluding the arrangement with Arturo Gonzalez in Del Rio, Ben Toney and his associate then drove across the Rio Grande and on to the dirt roads and through the shacks that led to the small antiquated studio and barn that housed the facilities of radio station XERF.

DEL RIO, Texas (CNN) -- Torrential rains and a wall of water buried this Texas border town, causing flooding that washed homes away, killed seven people and left as many as 30 others missing, officials said Monday.
In Del Rio, neighborhoods along flooded creeks were submerged, and two or three blocks of homes were washed away, along with several mobile homes.
Sheedy said the greatest concern in Del Rio is that another 6 inches of rain was expected to fall overnight Monday.

There is not too much to write about Amistad - it is a reservoir along the Rio Grande river, large in area but rather less scenic than the other Southwest recreation areas in far away Utah and Arizona - Lake Powell, Lake Mead and Flaming Gorge.
The lake began to fill in the late 1960s after a dam was built near Del Rio, the last town of any significance along the river before El Paso, 680 river miles further west.

The Whitehead Memorial Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Del Rio's heritage as well as Val Verde County's.
The museum came to life in 1962 when the Whiteheads, a noted local ranching family, purchased the old Perry Mercantile building (shown above) and donated it to the City of Del Rio and Val Verde County, to be utilized as a museum.
This is an open-air museum with a portion of the San Felipe Irrigation Canal flowing through the middle of its property, which is part of the original irrigation system built in 1871 - it insured sufficient water for crops.

Langtry is on Loop 25 off U.S. Highway 90 just north of the Rio Grande and eight miles west of the Pecos River near the southwestern corner of Val Verde County.
In 1939 the Texas Highway Department restored Bean's old saloon-courtroom, and by 1945 Langtry's population had climbed to 100.
By the early 1970s the number of residents there had dwindled to around forty, and most of the town, with the exception of the state-owned Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center, was put up for sale by the Dodd family, then residing in San Antonio and Del Rio.

Today marks the five-year anniversary of a federal disaster declaration for tragic flooding that shocked Del Rio, Texas, a city of 35,000 people on the Texas/Mexico border, and more than 300 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.
Beginning Saturday August 22, 1998, the remnants of Tropical Storm Charley stalled out over the Del Rio area producing 15 inches of rain in a 12-hour period.
FEMA and the State of Texas provided $16 million for housing, personal property, and other grants for individuals, and aid to repair the local infrastructure (schools, hospitals, essential services, etc).
