Born in Delaware County, Indiana, July 12, 1852, he grew up on a farm, attended country schools, spent two years in Ridgeville College, a Baptist institution at Ridgeville, Indiana, and in 1871 entered the Northern Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso, where he took both the teachers' training course and a business course, graduating in 1873.
He was reared in York County, then moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky, later to Ohio, and was married in Butler County of the latter state January 10, 1805, to Jane Cartmil.
She was born in Augusta County, Virginia, April 19, 1780, and died in Delaware County, Indiana, June 13, 1852, aged seventy-two years one month twelve days.

His father was born in Preble County, Ohio, May 17, 1812, where he was reared, and was there married to Miss Sarah TOMLINSON, who was also a native of Preble County, her parents coming from North Carolina in an early day.
In February, 1834, he came with his wife and one child by team to Indiana, and located on a tract of eighty acres of wild land in Delaware County, Center Township, which he has previously entered, they being among the early settlers of that county.
October 9, 1886, he received the Republican nomination at Hartford City for county commissioner, and although the county is strongly Democratic, he gained the election by a majority of fifty-six votes, which clearly indicates his popularity in the county, and in securing the election he did no lose a half day from his regular work.

MICHAEL BOWERS, a well known and reliable resident of Salem township, where he has large land interests, was born in Delaware County, Ind., May 9, 1841, a son of Andrew and Mary (Shafer) Bowers, natives of Rockingham county, Va., of German parentage.
In 1864, feeling that his country needed his services, he enlisted in the Twenty-filth Indiana light infantry, was sent to Nashville, and from there marched to Huntsville, requiring twenty-two days to make the trip, owing to the rain which fell in torrents during sixteen days of the time.
Bowers is the owner of 1O2 acres of fine land, and this property is the result of the honest and persevering labor of its owner.
