Delay line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In electronics and derivative fields such as telecommunications, a delay line is rigorously defined as a single-input-channel device, in which the output channel state at a given instant, t, is the same as the input channel state at the instant t−n, where n is a number of time units, i.e.
A transmission line or equivalent device (such as an analog delay line) used to delay a signal.
In digital logic and digital signal processing, a delay line refers to a sequential logic element in which the output state at a given time n (in samples) is the same as the input was at the time n−L.

Fiber optic delay line filter - Patent 4128759   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A photo responsive means receives the delayed output light energy signals transmitted by the plurality of fiber optic light paths and produces a single electrical output signal as a function of the sum of the delayed output light energy signals, thus performing a filtering or correlation function.
A further modification of the narrowband fiber optic delay line filter described hereinbefore contemplates the inclusion of a means for changing the propagation constant of the fiber optic light path so that the bandpass of the narrowband fiber optic delay line filtering function may be tuned as desired.
The fiber optic delay line of the present invention may also assume a configuration in which the temporally varying input signals are developed by a plurality of independent means such as antennae which are responsive to an angularly received electromagnetic wavefront.

Delay line memories   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In an acoustic delay line memory, bits are inserted sequentially into one end of a long metal wire as acoustic pulses, by means of a transducer (see below).
The storage capacity of a delay line memory is determined by the pulse propagation speed, the physical length of the line, and the duration of a single pulse.
On both ends, the delay line is terminated with neoprene damping pads in order to prevent pulses from being reflected back into the line.

 The G-Force Delay effect
Max delay time for both lines together is 1480ms; if you set the Line 1 taps to 1480ms, you should get no delay in the Line 2 taps (but see the bug description).
Max delay time in the G-Force Delay block is 1480ms, but this can be increased to 1880ms by using the Pitch Shifter's delay in series with the Delay block and setting Mix to 100% and Feedback to 0% on both.
When setting delay times the usual way (using milliseconds), the LFO speed should also be twice the delay "speed" (=delay time), but that's harder to calculate since the LFO speed is measured in Hz and delay "speed" (=delay time) is measured in milliseconds.

Delay-Line Memory   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The delay medium should slow the propagation rate of the information sufficiently so that the size of the storage equipment for a large number of pulses be within reason.
A simple acoustic delay line consists of a delay medium and two transducers; this is shown in Figure 15-1.
In this way the delay period is broken up into a number of pulse periods, each pulse period being identified by a particular count or address as indicated by the counter.

Custom Delay Line - Information Page   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
An electromagnetic delay line is a specially designed transmission line or an electrical network approximation of one, which delays a signal, from input to output, by a time interval determined by the electrical length of the line.
The selection of the proper delay device for a given application is not only important from an economic stand point, but it can also contribute to the ultimate success or failure of a system.
For long delays, or where the required frequency response is in the Megahertz range, this 3 dB cut-off point imposes a severe limitation and makes the choice of a sonic line mandatory at these higher frequencies.

 Tapped Delay Line (TDL)
A tapped delay line (TDL) is a delay line with at least one ``tap''.
A delay-line tap extracts a signal output from somewhere within the delay line, optionally scales it, and usually sums with other taps for form an output signal.
Thus, a tap implements a shorter delay line within a larger one, as shown in Fig.

In both feed-forward and pre-distortion techniques, some form of induced delay is usually required for phase/delay manipulation or processing.
Delay Filters have become an increasingly popular method of incorporating this delay.
And third, Delay Filters can be easily integrated with other components, such as couplers, attenuators, isolators and detectors typically used in feed-forward power amplifier architectures.

 Extensible delay-line memory
Several years ago, I posted some articles on the construction of a delay line memory that can be used as the infinite store of a universal computer embedded in Life.
In Life, a delay line stores a sequence of bits by endlessly recirculating a stream of gliders or spaceships.
To simulate a Turing machine using a delay line, one must let the loop recirculate to simulate a backward move.

Design of the autocorrelator delay line follows closely the one proposed in [48].
A characteristic feature of this delay line is that XOR in n-th stage operates on signals delayed by 2n sampling intervals thus making it a natural choice for designs with double oversampling, see Eq.
Further improvement of the design quality was achieved by performing post-layout reoptimization of a 2-stage delay line with parasitic inductances extracted with Stony Brook in-house programs L-Meter and lm2cir and by calculating the margins of a 4-stage delay line.

 Delay-Line Interpolation
When delay lines need to vary smoothly over time, some form of interpolation between samples is usually required to avoid ``zipper noise'' in the output signal as the delay length changes.
Linear interpolation is perhaps most commonly used because it is very straightforward and inexpensive, and because it sounds very good when the signal bandwidth is small compared with half the sampling rate.
For a delay line in a nearly lossless feedback loop, such as in a vibrating string simulation, allpass interpolation is usually a better choice since it costs the same as linear interpolation in the first-order case and has no gain distortion.
