Delayed sleep phase syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Delayed sleep-phase syndrome (DSPS) is a chronic sleep disorder in which the patient's internal body clock is not in sync with the morning-rise / evening-sleep pattern of the majority of adults.
Often, sufferers manage on a few hours sleep a night during the working week, then "catch up" by sleeping excessively at the weekend and sometimes by means of afternoon or evening naps, with inevitable effects on their social lives and, after decades, on their general health.

During the 2-week luteal phase of each treatment cycle, patients were randomized to receive 30 min of evening light therapy using: (1) 10000 lx cool-white fluorescent light (active condition); or (2) 500 lx red fluorescent light (placebo condition), administered by a light box at their homes.
Sleep and activity rhythms are related to circadian phase in the blind.
The clinical circumstances for use of chronobiotics in sleep disturbances of the circadian kind, such as jet lag, shift work, delayed sleep-phase syndrome, advanced sleep-phase syndrome, irregular and non-24-hr sleep- wake cycles, are described under reorganized headings of disorders of entrainment, partial entrainment, and desynchronization.

Forcing a patient to go to sleep early, for example by the use of sleeping pills, and forcing early rising does not result in adaptation to the new sleeping pattern.
Similarly anti-depressants, which are often prescribed for insomnia, may delay sleep onset even further in DSPS.

However, they do sleep soundly, wake up spontaneously, and do not feel sleepy again until their next "night," if they are allowed to follow their own late sleeping schedule.
These persons have difficulty falling asleep and difficulty waking because their biological clocks are out of phase with the sleeping and waking times they try to carry out.

Sufferers – traditionally termed "night owls" – have an identifiable sleep pattern, with the majority falling asleep in the pre-dawn hours and waking in the (early) afternoon.
However, left unacknowledged, DSPS can cause the same problems that would be expected if adults with a normal sleep pattern should force themselves to wake up in the middle of the night and try to go to sleep in the early evening.
