		Working in TV from 1947, Mann directed over 100 live plays, the best known of which was Paddy Chayefsky's "Marty." In 1955 he directed a big-screen version, starring Ernest Borgnine as the lonely Bronx butcher in search of love.
		Mann directed several competent TV adaptations, such as "Jane Eyre" (1971) and "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1979), in a career that was almost exclusively devoted to television after 1968.
		Mann was president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) from 1967-1971.

		After hemming and hawing he finally calls Clara for a second date, much to the chagrin of his shocked friends, and in so doing he admonishes them for their tribe mentality when all any of them really want is to be happy in a loving marriage.
		Though later times would call out these politics as awfully retrograde the movie is content to repeatedly sell the value of men and women joining together in marriage as the most natural thing in the world.

		Years after directing the classic Marty (1955), Delbert Mann became a creator of prestige TV movie projects, none more daunting than his adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front (1979).
		Richard Thomas stars as Paul Baumer, a teen who, at the urging of zealously patriotic teacher Kantorek (Donald Pleasence) enthusiastically enlists to fight for Germany in WWI, accompanied by several school chums.
		Though a 1930 film adaptation by Lewis Milestone was widely beloved by fans of cinema and the source material, Mann's TV movie was well received, earning a Golden Globe and Emmys for Borgnine and Patricia Neal, who played Paul's mother.
