Delerium: Poem: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
While the similarity is unavoidable-- I would've felt guilty had I not mentioned it-- Delerium are decidedly less pretentious and even less grandiose, with a sound that's considerably more lush than its thinner counterparts.
Delerium's wider range of instrumentation, as well as their grounded beats, keep their sound from sailing into the stratosphere.
When Delerium forego the listless Gregorics and stale beats employed by their more renowned contemporaries, they truly shine.

Sadly, Delerium albums are very hard to come by, with their disting lack of publicity in the UK (of my form of 80, about 5 of us have heard of them, although with my advice many more are fans now).
Delerium started out as a more ambient group with none of the ethereal vocals that fans are so used to hearing.
It is an excellent addition to any Delerium fan's collection or to people who aren't familiar with their music but want to hear their music anyways.

 DELERIUM MUSIC
After their album KARMA, Delerium co-founders Bill Leebs and Rhys Fuller briefly parted ways to work on individual projects (POEM was produced by Leebs alone while Fuller worked on the CONJURE ONE album).
Delerium, the brainchild of former Front Line Assembly members Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber, was originally formed to explore alternate rhythms and influences.
Delerium is one of the several musical incarnations of Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber; in various modes, they are also known as Front Line Assembly, Noise Unit, and Synaesthesia, among other project names.

 Delerium: album reviews and ratings
The best way to describe Delerium music of this era is to compare it to background music of scary movies: dark ambient electronic sounds, with occasional distorted male vocals.
In 1994, Delerium introduced female vocals to their multi-layered keyboard arrangements, by hiring Kristy Thirsk (Rose Chronicles) to provide the angelic voices.
And, as for Delerium's trademark inclusion of monastic chants, the duo preferred this time to find a choir and recreate the Gregorian melodies in a Vancouver church.

He wants the band to transcend standard three-chord rock, and he does that with style on Delerium's fourth record, the sweeping "Chimera," a bold blend of world pop, electronica, New Age, and old-fashioned acoustic pop.
"When I started Delerium, I wanted it to enhance your surroundings and be part of the spiritual side of your life," Leeb says from his home in Vancouver.
Fulber says he and Leeb are always looking to come up with ideas that will add different flavors to their music.

 REVIEW: Delerium - "Poem"
Delerium is reminiscent of work by This Ascension, My Scarlet Life, The Changelings - classical arrangements surrounded by an ethereal collection of acoustic instruments, Gregorian vocals and smooth rhythms.

 AmbientMusicGuide.com - Delerium
Delerium started life as a downtempo spin-off of Leeb's industrial synthpop and proto-techno outfit Front Line Assembly but increasingly became the focus of the pair's creative energy.
Delerium albums are also a time capsule of how their own development paralleled the technological changes fundamental to the birth and ongoing development of house and techno music.
In Delerium's case you homogenise the sound, relegate instrumentals to second place and keep on making commercial pop records.

What I'm most interested in is beautiful singing something that speaks to me, she says That's my main guideline to everything that I sing, whether it's opera, recital or concert a sentiment you can be sure that Messrs Leeb and Fulber agree with wholeheartedly.
The album also features contribution from a host of Delerium regulars; Faithless vocalist Zoe Johnston, Kristy Thirsk (a stalwart since their 1995 Nettwerk debut Semantic Spaces), and sessions virtuoso Kirsty Hawkshaw, whose CV is a veritable who's who of electronic music, including Orbital, BT and Tiesto.
However, fans of Delerium's more cinematic moments will not be disappointed by the grandiose "Tectonic Shift," a slow-building storm cloud of an instrumental, augmented by sweeping John Barry-esque strings courtesy of arranger Chris Elliott (Moulin Rouge, Rufus Wainwright), whilst the haunted "Apparition" provides Nuages Du Monde with a suitably elegiac conclusion.

 Interview: Bill Leeb of Delerium
Better known for their work as the industrial-edged group Front Line Assembly, the duo's decade-old alter-ego, Delerium, fashions itself more on the lines of ambient world-beat.
Curiousity-seekers who thrive on the beats of Enigma and Deep Forest would be well served to give the group's latest release, Karma, a spin.
Whereas claims of sanitizing third world music by western artists for western consumption are often accurate, Delerium delivers a substantive offering and lush presence that many of its sterile brethren lack.

 Delerium: Karma: Pitchfork Record Review
The music is a beat- heavy, flowing soundscape that comes close at times to trance techno and is a perfect example of what happens when two industrial megastars figure out all the other sounds their keyboards can make.
Don't be confused, Delerium is Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb of Front Line Assembly, in a much more mellow and groovy mood, and they've dragged their friends along to join in the party-- most notably label- mates Kristy Thirsk of Rose Chronicles and Sarah McLachlan.
To be fair, what Delerium is doing isn't new, and it's never been an original concept, but they pull it off well, making Karma a disc that I couldn't pull from my player for weeks.

Featuring an array of renowned singers, Nuages Du Monde neatly combines the more overtly commercial pop of previous album Chimera (2003) with the lush sensual ambience and cloistered harmonies of 1197s Karma, a meld that bridges the gap between world music, new age electronics and modern classical.
On the other side of the coin, the Jael fronted Lost And Found is a radio friendly vignette of lazily seductive pop that taps a more commercial vein, while English vocal group Mediaeval Baebes add a dose of religiosity and sophistication to Extollere and the pretty Sister Sojourn Ghost.

Modern rocker Matthew Sweet adds an edge to "Daylight," but the classicality found with using a female voice is what makes Delerium most familiar and most enjoyable.
