Delete: The New Erase - Gizmodo
BY WORF AT On Mac keyboards, the backspace key, instead of having "backspace" written on it, says "delete".
And yes, the key below "insert" says "delete" as well (but with an icon of an arrow to the right...).
All the more fun to confuse people, but the keys work the same regardless (i.e., the delete key really is a backspace key, and Windows treats the "return" key as Enter).

Delete key - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On full size computer keyboards, the delete key, labelled "Del", should, during normal text editing, discard the character at the cursor's position, moving all following characters one position "back" towards the freed place.
On Macintosh computers, however, the backspace key is called the delete key, while a separate key, also called delete and in the traditional location above the cursor arrows, serves as a forward delete key.
On many notebook computer keyboards the key labeled Delete (sometimes Delete and Backspace are printed on the same key) serves the same purpose as a Backspace key.

The Linux keyboard and console HOWTO: Delete and Backspace
Unfortunately, all this key, or any key, does is producing a code, and one only can hope that the kernel tty driver and all application programs can be configured such that the backspace key indeed does function as a `delete previous character' key.
The standard Unix tty driver does not recognize a cursor, or keys (like the arrow keys) to move the current position, and hence does not have a command `delete current character' either.
The left Alt key is sometimes called the Meta key, and by default the combinations AltL-X are bound to the symbol MetaX.

 Linux Backspace/Delete mini-HOWTO
When a key is pressed on the keyboard, a number of hardware and software components cooperate so as to guarantee that the intended meaning of the key (e.g., emitting a certain character) matches the actual behaviour of the key.
For instance, on the Linux console the Delete keysym is mapped to the ASCII code 127 (DEL), the Remove keysym on a suitable escape sequence, and the BackSpace keysym to ASCII code 8 (BS).
Remember that the fact that the keys produce the right behaviour in a certain application does not mean that the application is using correctly the terminal database—they could work just by chance.

DEL Does Not Delete - GNU Emacs Manual   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Every keyboard has a large key, a little ways above the or key, which you normally use outside Emacs to erase the last character that you typed.
If the usual erasure key deletes forwards instead of backwards, that is probably what happened—Emacs ought to be treating the key as , but it isn't.
With a window system, if the usual erasure key is labeled and there is a key elsewhere, but the key deletes backward instead of forward, that too suggests Emacs got the wrong information—but in the opposite sense.

If you are using a Mac, simply type a few characters and then anywhere in the text field press the forward delete key.
Note: Since the key id is 127 for other platforms as well, I also check the OS to make sure it is a Mac before overriding the default behavior.

What is Delete key? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Often abbreviated as Del, the Delete key is used to remove characters and other objects.
On PCs, the Delete key generally removes the character immediately under the cursor (or to the right of the insertion point), or the highlighted text or object.
Note the difference between the Delete key, which deletes the character under the cursor, and the Backspace key, which deletes the character to the left of the cursor or insertion point.

Fixing the Backspace/Ruboff key in Linux's Xterm and Emacs
If Emacs recognizes the key normally above the enter/return key (that produces a delete to the left) as sending the help command rather than the delete to the left command, then you are experiencing this problem.
This key is typically called the backspace key, neutrally known as the ruboff key.
The delete key will refer to the key that says "delete" or "del" on it and is expected to delete the character to the right.

Believe it or not, deleting fast and well is actually one of the most difficult skills to master, since it requires you to be straight with yourself starting from the moment a new message arrives.
Jedi trick: When this particular attitude on response and deletion moves from “interesting speculative theory” to “how you operate,” you’ll no longer have to fear and despise the delete key and what it potentially says about your slackitude.
Responding may be better than deleting, but deleting is way better than first slacking for 6 months then finally, reluctantly deleting.

However, Linux had 16 entries per key (one for each combination of the Shift, AltGr, Ctrl, Alt modifiers) and presently has 256 entries per key, while X has 4 entries per key (one for each combination of Shift, Mod), so some information is necessarily lost.

The two keys PrintScrn/SysRq and Pause/Break are special in that they have two keycodes: the former has keycode 84 when Alt is pressed simultaneously, and keycode 99 otherwise; the latter has keycode 101 when Ctrl is pressed simultaneously, and keycode 119 otherwise.

 Using the Delete Key
It's also a good idea, after deleting files, to let them reside in your Recycle bin for a few weeks until you've given your PC a good test drive and are assured that the deleted files won't be missed.
From the Windows Explorer, some of these nonessential files can be easily deleted by clicking the "Delete" button on the toolbar or simply by pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard.
While using the Delete option is good for deleting individual, unwanted files, it's not a very efficient way of getting rid of entire programs.
