In 1991, the remainder of Route 480, from Route 280 near Harrison Street in San Francisco to the junction of Route 1, Funston approach, and the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge, was deleted per SB 181, Ch 498.
Route 480 was approved as chargeable interstate sometime pre-1965; it was deleted as a chargeable route in August 1965 (hence, its signage after that date with a state shield (Route 480), as opposed to an interstate shield).
California Highway Patrol Officer Larry J. Jaramillo died in the line of duty in a traffic collision on Route 395 at the Kern County San Bernardino County line, while returning from court in Inyo County on June 22, 1993.

California 56 is the incomplete Ted Williams Parkway between Interstate 5 in Carmel Valley and Interstate 15 in Rancho Penasquitos, all within the city of San Diego.
California 163 is the primary commuter route from downtown to Interstate 15.
SANDAG deleted California 157 because of the "extensive residential and commercial development in the western portion of the corridor." The right-of-way purchased for the eastern portion of the route was sold in the mid-1970s.

 Hawaii Highways - Road Photos - Cutouts cross-index
The signs still out there in Hawaii all have some rust damage, and usually reflect old route numbers and routes long deleted from the state highway system.
Unlike in Virginia where I live, and my home state of California (where cutout U.S. and state route shields are standard), state route cutout signs are uncommon, and are not being erected or maintained anymore.
The first is the route number, with a link to the Hawaii Highways route list which has more information about the route.

The portion of this state highway between Interstate 805 and the future California 125 interchange is currently an expressway and is slated for upgrade to freeway standards; once this upgrade is complete, the entire route is slated to become Interstate 905.
Highway planners added the California 157 freeway to the state system in 1959, but it was rescinded locally by SANDAG in 1974.
SANDAG deleted California 157 because of the "extensive residential and commercial development in the western portion of the corridor." The right-of-way purchased for the eastern portion of the route was sold in the mid-1970s.

The western segment of California 54 is the South Bay Freeway between Interstate 5 at the border between National City and Chula Vista and California 125 near Sweetwater Reservoir.
California 52 is the Soledad Freeway, starting at Interstate 5 at the foot of Mount Soledad in Rose Canyon, passing through Soledad Canyon to form the bottom of the Golden Triangle (locally known as University Town Center or UTC) before ascending Kearny Mesa.

This realignment of route numbers shows that the idea that Interstate 880 was stolen from Sacramento and given to the Bay Area is false -- Interstate 880 was not in use in California for at least two years (1980-1982).
The original incarnation of Interstate 880 in California was therefore decommissioned as a result of that action in 1980.
880 is deleted from the state highway system; 80 is rerouted over it.

 California Route 480
While people were quick to rebuild Route 80 (and not as quick as Routes 280 and 880), the San Franciscans somehow found the earthquake as an excuse to get rid of Route 480.
In the package was a suggestion for the removal of Route 480 freeway, but in 1986, a voter initiative in the ballot supported the retention of the freeway, and resulted in the freeway deleted from the proposed improvements.
According to Daniel Faigin, it was approved as an interstate but was then rejected as one in August, 1965, which would explain why Route 480 (a would-be infant interstate of Route 80) is signed as a state highway.
