'Delicatessen' is a very original comedy from Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also directed the great 'Amélie'.
Although its subject is close to very scary the movie is a comedy and to be honest it is very funny at times.
'Delicatessen' is not only pretty funny, it looks terrific as well.

Delicatessen is again a futuristic fantasy, balancing simple and likeable characters with ingenious situations and special effects.
JandC have (in my opinion) never surpassed Delicatessen in their career since, and nearly a decade later, it stands as a milestone in recent French cinema.
As a fl comedy, Delicatessen is excellent; as a story it is captivating and intriguing; and as a warning, it is poignant, for there is undoubtedly a serious message underlying the film.

"Delicatessen" is set in a decaying apartment building, in an unnamed French city, in an unknown time in history, after some unexplained, apocalyptic disaster has left the world in gray, ruinous decay.
"Delicatessen" thrusts us into post-apocalyptic disaster -- and gives us hope, in a way that is both darkly moving and strangely uplifting.
While the butcher is having sex with his girlfriend, the springs of his bed set a squeaky tempo -- and before long all of the building's residents are going about their routines to the lovers' sexual pace.

Delicatessen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A North American delicatessen is often referred to informally as a deli.
The delicatessen, as found in the cities of the United States (and occasionally the UK and Canada), emphasizes take-out food, but it is not a fast food restaurant (though there are fast delicatessens, such as Druxy's in Canada).
Reference works state that the word delicatessen comes from German Delikatessen, and that this German word is the plural of Delikatesse, which in turn comes from French and means "delicious things (to eat)".

Delicatessen is a feast (if you will) of hilarious vignettes, slapstick gags, and sweetly eccentric characters, including a man in a swampy room full of frogs, a woman doggedly determined to commit suicide (she never gets its right), and a pair of brothers who make toy sound boxes that "moo" like cows.
Delicatessen displayed an inventiveness in their sometimes surreal imagery but also with quirky, endearing characters they so expertly crafted.
Delicatessen was the blueprint for all other Jeunet films to follow, featuring an irrepressible protagonist who injects a sense of engaging child-like wonderment into an otherwise cynical world.

 Delicatessen | The A.V. Club
Delicatessen opens in a post-apocalyptic town where diseased-looking, yellowish fog hangs over the few standing buildings, isolating them into scrofulous pockets of humanity where atrocities can breed unnoticed.
Most of the latter are outsized Gilliam-esque characters: a man living in a dankly flooded apartment, where he breeds and devours snails and frogs; a depressed woman whose suicide attempts involve elaborate Rube Goldberg devices; and Dreyfus' nearsighted daughter Marie-Laure Dougnac, who sympathizes with Pinon and awkwardly attempts to woo him.
As of Delicatessen, Jeunet and Caro hadn't refined the richly elaborate design that characterized their later collaboration The City Of Lost Children and Jeunet's solo directorial projects.

Delicatessen (1991) is a French fl comedy by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, starring Dominique Pinon.

And "Delicatessen" manages to be a funny comedy in the tradition of Terry Gilliam, with the warped direction, surreal direction and strange settings.

When it turns out that Julie's father (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) is actually butchering human beings and selling the meat to the carnivorous tenants of the building, Julie must decide if she will remain loyal to her father's business or expose the truth in order to save Louison from being the next victim.
In one of the most mimicked scenes of the 1990s (most notably in commercials), the directors brilliantly choreograph a bizarre event in which the separate activities of each of the hotel's tenants--a couple making love in a squeaky bed, a man painting his ceiling, a woman playing the cello--become hilariously rhythmic and synchronized.
Delicatessen was based on a wacky screenplay by Gilles Adrien who cut his teeth as a writer of comic books.

A hugely enjoyable film, "Delicatessen" welds comedy and magic into a bizarre, grotesque fantasy of an oddball dystopian future.
Combining the cruel humour of Grimm's fairy stories, with the spirit of Terry Gilliam and that peculiarly French knack of putting magic into film, this feverish tale of star-crossed lovers and small town cannibalism has endured as a true masterpiece of the fantastique.
With "Delicatessen", Jeunet and Caro gave the world a canny and confident calling card for that most coveted of talents - commercial arthouse cinema.

Clapet the Butcher (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) has a solution, though; he runs the innocuous-sounding Delicatessen on the ground floor of a shabby apartment building, and never seems to run out of commodities to sell to the tenants.
There's a new handyman in town, though, former circus clown Louison (Dominique Pinon), who's put to work right away painting over the drab interiors with equally drab paint.
Louison meets and falls in love with Clapet's sheltered, nearsighted daughter, Julie (Marie-Laure Dougnac), and soon the Delicatessen's supply system is threatened.

Clapet has roped the others into his nasty system for survival: From time to time, the tenants will hire a handyman, fatten him up, and then happily slaughter him, subsisting on the meat until a new victim can be found.
Watch that exchange—or the one where Julie and Louison play a duet on cello and saw—and you will pray to all the cinematic gods there are that these sweet kids survive and find some measure of happiness.
But it's not all treacle, either, because Delicatessen is a slapstick masterpiece, filled with nonstop hilarity and invention.

Managed by a daunting landlord named Clapet (Jean-Claude Dreyfus), who also serves as the butcher at the local delicatessen in the building, the tenants must rely on him for refuge, as well as the one thing essential to living: food.
Still, while fans of the award-winning “Amelie” may not discover the same charming storytelling in the director’s feature length debut, “Delicatessen” is a title certainly worthy of its cult status.
