Self-aligning cutter head assembly for delimbing trees - United States Patent 4,749,012
It is generally known to delimb trees by encircling the tree trunk with curved blade members and either moving the curved blade members along the length of the tree, or pulling the tree in a longitudinal direction through the curved blade members.
The delimbing device of this patent is supported in a fixed position on a trailer and includes a pair of semi-circular lower cutting blade jaws with a single semi-circular upper cutting jaw pivotally mounted between the lower jaws.
The delimbed tree may then be positioned on the length cutter, not shown, and then the cut length is loaded on the truck, or the whole delimbed tree can be directly loaded on a truck positioned adjacent the knuckle boom loader 12.

Tree delimbing apparatus - Patent 4919175
The delimbing apparatus of claim 4 wherein said lower ends of said support arms are pivotally connected to said vehicle at points adjacent to the central longitudinal axis of said vehicle.
To operate the delimber, the boom is extended and the delimbing head grasps the tree, using grapple jaws.
In operation, the delimber head is lowered to contact with the butt of the log 48 which is to be delimbed, and grappling arms 17 are tightened around the log.

Logging - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tree is turned into logs by removing the limbs (delimbing) and cutting it into logs of optimal length (bucking).
Trees are felled, delimbed, bucked, and sorted (pulpwood, sawlog, etc.) at the stump area leaving limbs and tops in the forest.
Harvesters fell the tree, delimb and buck it, and place the resulting logs in bunks to be brought to the landing by the forwarder.

Harvester (forestry) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harvester, type of heavy vehicle employed in cut-to-length logging operations for felling, delimbing and bucking trees.
The wheels pivot apart to allow the tree to be embraced by the harvester head, and pivot together to hug the tree tight.
The wheels are driven in rotation to force the cut tree stem through the delimbing knives.

Tree delimbing device with self-aligning cutter head - Patent 4899794
A tree delimbing device according to claim 1 wherein said pivot means supported on said opposite sides of said rectangular support frame includes support pins positioned in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the tree trunk being moved through the respective cutting and guiding means.
A tree delimbing device according to claim 3 wherein said support pins are positioned slightly rearwardly of the center of gravity so that the forward end of said rectangular support frame is tilted downwardly by a slight amount when said cutter head assembly is not in use.
A tree delimbing device according to claim 4 wherein said pivot means connecting said horizontal medial portion of said yoke member to said base plate is positioned forwardly of said support pins on opposite sides of said rectangular support frame.

Delimbing and topping can occur in the stump area or at a point before roadside.
A typical cut-to-length logging system could employ a one-grip harvester which fells, delimbs and bucks the trees right in the stump area, and a forwarder to carry the pulpwood and logs to roadside.
Similarly, when using a one-grip harvester to produce tree-lengths or delimbing in the cut-over with a processor to produce tree-lengths, the advantages associated with both the full tree systems (e.g., high productivity and concentrating processing at roadside) and cut-to-length systems (e.g., extended off-road transport distances, cleaner wood, minimal roadside landings) are lost.

With four delimbing knives, two of them fixed, the Coronas are maneuverable inside tight first-thinning forests, but are powerful enough to handle some clearcut operations, the company says.
Fixed delimbing knives are attached to the tilt frame and movable knives, made from heat-treated steel, are hydraulically controlled to adjust to the tree's contour.

Machines equipped with both the stroke-type delimber and stationary delimbing knives may be appropriate for mixed hardwood and conifer forests.
Delimbing knives may be modified for debarking by increasing the pressure on the knives and using feed rollers with more aggressive teeth.
The felling or processor head is hydraulically operated and typically consists of a chain saw that fells and bucks the log, rollers that advance the log through the head, and knives and/or stroke delimbers that remove limbs.

Trees were never completely delimbed during the manual operation, because of the problems with accessing the bottom side of the tree.
Mechanical delimbing occurred at the landing after skidding operations and no manual delimbing was required when this operation was included in the system.
The manual delimbing was also considered a very dangerous and fatiguing operation, particularly given the average limb size and number of limbs that had to be removed.

OSHA requires all logging employees to undergo thorough training on recognition and avoidance of hazards for any logging task to which they are assigned prior to beginning work.
Trees should be closely inspected prior to delimbing, and workers should position themselves such that no limb or branch, or movement of the trunk, will cause injury.
To release the tension in spring poles, with a chain saw carefully shave off fiber from the underside of the spring pole at the point of greatest tension, such that the limb weakens and the tension releases slowly.
