  Walkabout - Deloraine
Deloraine is a charming, historically interesting and attractive town located on the banks of the Meander River 228 km north of Hobart, 48 km west of Launceston and 253 m above sea level.
This resulted in a dramatic increase in population which led to the town becoming a municipality in 1863 and, in 1872, a railway line between Deloraine and Launceston was constructed.The early settlers raised cattle and grew wheat but the climate was against them and they did not prosper.
To the south of the river is the original village of Alveston which was in existence before the larger settlement of Deloraine began to develop on the northern bank of the river.

HMAS DELORAINE was one of sixty Australian Minesweepers (commonly known as corvettes) built during World War II in Australian shipyards as part of the Commonwealth Government’s wartime shipbuilding programme.
DELORAINE commissioned at Sydney on 22 November 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Desmond A. Menlove RANR(S).
On 26 December 1941 DELORAINE sailed from Sydney for Darwin to begin her active operational career with a period of anti-submarine patrol duty in the Arafura Sea.

Deloraine has been chosen as the only town in Tasmania to be involved in a research project to be undertaken by the Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia and the Centre for the Small Town Development in York, Western Australia.
