Deloraine is a charming, historically interesting and attractive town located on the banks of the Meander River 228 km north of Hobart, 48 km west of Launceston and 253 m above sea level.
To the south of the river is the original village of Alveston which was in existence before the larger settlement of Deloraine began to develop on the northern bank of the river.
The Tasmania Pottery, on the road to Chudleigh, is no longer operating as a tourist attraction but it is still possible to see its outstanding external feature - the largest coffee pot in Australia.

Although the area was settled by Europeans in the 1830s, Deloraine didn’t really begin to develop until after 1846, and today it’s a National Trust-classified town.
In Deloraine itself there’s a volunteer-run Visitor Information Centre at 98 Emu Bay Rd (Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 9am–4pm, Sun 9am–6pm; tel 03/6362 3471), with maps and details on walking times and conditions; the centre is housed in an old inn with an attached folk museum ($2).
In Deloraine there are plenty of informal places to eat on the main street, Emu Bay Road.

A few buildings survive from the original village, established about 1840, among them Bonney's Inn (1831), now a restaurant, and Bowerbank Mill (ca 1853), a water mill built by William Archer which was converted to steam power in 1871 and now houses an art gallery.

HMAS Deloraine (J-232/M-232), named for the town of Deloraine, Tasmania, was a Bathurst class corvette built by Morts Dock and Engineering at Balmain in New South Wales, launched on 26 July 1941 by Dame Mary Hughes, wife of the Minister for the Navy, and commissioned on 27 November 1941.
The Deloraine, in company with USS Edsall, HMAS Katoomba and HMAS Lithgow, attacked and sank the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-124 — the first enemy submarine to be sunk in Australian waters — on 20 January 1942.
HMAS Deloraine paid off to reserve at Fremantle on 30 June 1948 and was sold for scrap to the Hong Kong Delta Shipping Company on 8 August 1956.

It was the only swimming pool we saw in Tasmania, and the only time we donned our swimmers (oz for costumes), except for another occasion which I will get to.

Lieutenant Pearson Foote owned the original parcel of land.  In 1831, Foote was granted 3,500 acres in the Northwest region of Tasmania, which he named Calstock, after his family's estate in England.
As the 3rd son to one of Tasmania's most successful landowners, Field and his wife Mary established the site as a Thoroughbred Stud.
