The Cucapá used the delta floodplain extensively, for harvesting Palmer’s saltgrass, a wild grain, and for cultivating maize (corn), beans, and squash.
Although not extensively studied, the delta’s significance for migratory birds is indisputable, as it is the principle freshwater marsh in the region.

Another fish in the delta on the endangered species list is the desert pupfish (Cyprinodon macularius) (Zengel and Glenn, 1996; Varela-Romero et al., 1998; Nagler et al., 2000).
The riparian corridor of the lower Colorado River was historically a mixture of gallery forest habitat (cottonwood and willow trees) interspersed with backwater wetlands (dominated by cattail and other emergent plant species).

When the Town of Uncompahgre was platted, the resultant layout resembled a triangle, and some early citizens said it resembled the Greek letter “Delta.” The name stuck and the vote for the name “Delta” was passed by the citizens, and approved by the U.S. Postal Department.
Then with the construction of a new Delta County Courthouse in 1986 on Courthouse Square, a new jail was also built with it, though it did not appear until 1903.
The Town Marshal in Delta in those early times had so little law enforcement work to do that, by ordinance, he was also responsible for the maintenance of the city streets.
