 | | In 1960 the squadron retired the last of its "Flying Boats" and transitioned to the Lockheed P2V "NEPTUNE." In October 1961, VP-44 deployed to the Naval Air Facility, Sigonella, Sicily for five months, working with the Sixth Fleet, other NATO forces, and the project Mercury space program. |
