Deme - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Ancient Greece, a deme (plural demoi) was a subdivision of Attica, the region of Greece surrounding Athens.
A deme functioned to some degree as a polis in miniature, and indeed some demes, such as Eleusis and Acharnae, were in fact significant towns.
Demes were combined with other demes from the same area to make trittyes, larger population groups, which in turn were combined to form the ten tribes, or phyles of Athens.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2000.04.18
J. is not the first historian to emphasize the crucial role of the deme in democratizing Athenian culture: David Whitehead and Robin Osborne have both shown that the deme association imitated the institutions of the central government, bringing democratic practice and participation to the local level of the neighborhood.
Previous scholarship on the deme association has focused on the deme's role in fostering a common democratic identity at the local level of the neighborhood through its imitation of the polis' democratic institutions.
There is surely something deeply paradoxical about using evidence from the two demes (with the exception of Piraeus) that are known to have continued to publish documents in the third century to attest the generalized decline of the deme association that is itself attested by a fall off in inscribing.

The demes were named after the small towns and hamlets, and sometimes from distinguished families living there and owning property at the time of the division.
As every citizen was obliged to belong to a deme, the complete official description of him included the name of his deme as well as of his father.
The demtitce, or members of a deme, had also a common property, a common chest for receiving the rents and taxes, common officers with a demarchus at their head, and common meetings for the discussion of common interests, elections, and so forth.

With this, DEME confirms its strategy to remain a strong player in all segments of the dredging market, by means of a sufficient diversification of its dredging plant, and hence to keep, as a world player, its market share and profitability at a high level.

This means the population isn't "well mixed" and the individual doesn't meet other individuals at random, rather they tend to meet the same individuals over and over again, this gives altruist higher odds to meet other altruist and thus altruists prosper.
An Example to this is "deme structure" population where individuals belong to specific deme and are more likely to meet other individuals from the same deme they belong too rather then individuals from other demes.
