 MORIDVNVM DEMETARVM
The Geography of Ptolemy (extract above) in the early-2nd century AD assigns the Iron-Age Demetae tribe within the region of Dyfed and ascribes to them the two poleis of Luentinum and Maridunum.
In addition to the passage from Ptolemy, the town also receives mention in the Antonine Itinerary, produced in the late-2nd century, as the south-western terminus of route number twelve of the British section.
Iter XII is entitled "the route from Muridunum to Viroconium", and details the 186 mile journey from Carmarthen, the civitas capital of the Demetae to Viroconium Cornoviorum (Wroxeter, Shropshire) the capital of the Cornovii tribe.

During the Late Pre-Roman Iron-Age the Demetae tribe inhabited a territory roughly equatable with the modern county of Dyfed.
There are only two places of note in the Roman administrative district, both of which are attributed to the tribe by Ptolemy (vide infra); the (Flavian?) fort at Moridunum (Carmarthen, Dyfed) and the gold mines at Dolaucothi.
The only Romano-British settlement of note within the demesne of the Demetae was the vicus or roadside settlement outside the fort at Moridunum (Carmarthen, Dyfed).

Britannia EBK Biographies: Ednyfed, King of Dyfed
He was probably born there in the late 4th century and hence was named after it.
The area was then still known by the Roman name of the Civitas Demetarum, named after the local Celtic tribe of the Demetae.
It is not clear whether his father died before or after the final withdrawal of Roman troops from Britain around AD 410, but Ednyfed certainly appears to have upheld the family honour and soon established a local monarchy.

The Demetae were a tribe that lived in areas of modern Dyfed and gave their name in Welsh to the county.

Walesland, one of the raths which are so common in western Dyfed, has been thoroughly excavated.
Within its unmortared stone walls are the remains of six round huts which were built and rebuilt over the period of 250 B.C. to A.D. From later evidence, it is known that south-west Wales was the territory of the Demetae.
The multiplicity of small forts and the scarcity of larger fortifications among them suggests that the Demetae were organized in family groups and that they lacked any substantial central authority.

The tribes the Romans encountered in their time in Britain were known to the Romans as Ordovices, the Demetae, the Silures and the Deceangli: all Celtic tribes which had arrived in Britain from Europe over the preceding centuries.
Many people in Wales today regard themselves as Celtic, asserting a link ultimately back to these tribes.

Evidence has been found that Roman power reached further than was thought into remote south-western Wales.
Archaeologists from the Dyfed Archaeological Trust have traced, over the past three years, a well-engineered Roman road running 20 miles west of Carmarthen, civitas capital of the Demetae and the most westerly Roman town in Britain.
The line of the road disappears west of the East Cleddau river, and its final destination and purpose remain unclear.
