Fred A. Bernstein: One campus, two faces
Demetri Porphyrios *80 thinks it’s fitting that Whitman, which he designed in the collegiate-gothic style beloved by generations of Princetonians, and the new library, designed by Frank Gehry as a shimmering assemblage of glass and steel, will be constructed simultaneously.
In the case of Porphyrios, 2,500 tons of stone — the argillite used in such buildings as Henry and Foulke Halls — must be cut and pieced together into walls as much as 16 inches thick.
Porphyrios says that using stone will cost $4 million more than if Whitman College had been clad in brick, which he calls a "surprisingly small" price to pay to get the building to resemble its collegiate-gothic neighbors.

Gabion: Can you tell a wild man from a modernist? 2/4
Demetri Porphyrios's office block, in pole position on Brindleyplace's plaza, is a red-brick building rising from an interlaced round-arched stone portico to a stubby Italianate tower.
The portico is a gem, since the overlapping of the round, quasi-romanesque arches with their Doric columns creates a series of pointed gothic apertures: so you have Roman, Greek and gothic mixed up together.
Creative Classicists such as Porphyrios, or his happily named Winchester-based colleague Robert Adam, are doing far better than they ever did in the 1980s and today run large offices.

In September, the trustees' Committee on Grounds and Buildings reviewed preliminary designs for the two projects: Whitman College, the University's sixth residential college, which will be built between Baker Rink and Dillon Gym; and the science library, which will be constructed on the corner of Washington Road and Ivy Lane near Fine Hall.

The extensive appendix makes accessible to readers excerpts from some of the most important classical texts relating to architecture.
"A work is classical," Porphyrios writes, "not because it is immutable, eternal and sacred but because it continually searches for and brings out the new." Classical Architecture is both a pedagogic and critical book that has implications for our present-day theory of style, our view of history, and for the practice of architecture.
Lavishly illustrated in colour, and featuring numerous line drawings, Classical Architecture is an invaluable book for readers from a wide range of disciplines, the general public, and anyone who cares about the place of architecture in modern life.
