Demetrias   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The big prosperity of Demetrias as a commercial and political centre took place from 217 to 168 B.C. The excavations in Demetrias began at the end of the 19th century and are still in progress.
Demetrias during the roman era lost its importance, although it remained the capital of the Union of Magnetes.
Demetrias in the early Christian period obtained luxurious social buildings and two churches with mosaic floors and rich architectural decoration, one in the settlement of the northern harbour known as Basilica of Damokratia, and the second in the south of the town outside the wall, known as the Cemeterian Basilica.

She was of noble birth, being connected through her mother Proba and her husband Olybrius with some of the greatest families of Rome, and was possessed of great wealth.
When her daughter proposed to take vows of virginity, she refrained from influencing her; but when Demetrias appeared in the church clad in the dress of a virgin she shewed her great delight at this step.

Demetrias' husband, also a state slave, is a purple fisher; he collects the shellfish from which the dye is produced, but in effect owns his own boat.
As well, Demetrias is a fully developed character to set alongside Charis and Theodora (and also Pulcheria) as women who have found their true potential, and used it to the full.

Demetrias was Patriarch of Alexandria (189 - 232).
Sextus Julius Africanus, who visited Alexandria in the time of Demetrius, places his accession as eleventh bishop after Mark in the tenth year of Commodus; Eusebius' statement that it tenth of Severus (Historia Ecclesiastica, VI, 2) is a mistake.
While Demetrius was a scholar in his own right, taking part in the controversy over the proper calculation of Easter that preoccupied the Church in the time of Pope Victor I, Origen's brilliance eventually outshone Demetrius, and it is in his relationship with the famous theologian that Demetrias is defined in history.

Newman Reader - Church of the Fathers - Chapter 9
At the end of that time, a remarkable event happened; Demetrias, who now had arrived at woman's estate, declared her resolve of devoting herself to a single life; as it would seem, at her own instance, though Augustine and Alypius, by this time bishop of Thagaste, were unconscious instruments in her determination.
At the instance of Proba and Juliana, he addressed to Demetrias a letter, or rather tract, in order to encourage her in her determination; and as it happens to relate some of the circumstances under which that determination was made, it may suitably here be introduced to the reader's notice.
And holy and admirable as Demetrias was, she was, in fact, for awhile in hazard, and that from the influence of the particular heresy of the day, which was a temptation especially adapted to her case.

And as she read his advice, no doubt she would have in her mind's eye a picture of a rather eccentric, distinctly overweight, elderly gentleman, dressed in the simple habit of a monk, strict in his teaching and his behaviour, but capable of impressing the elite of Rome by his enthusiasm and example.
As with all of Pelagius's writings, the textual history of the Letter to Demetrias is complicated by his condemnation as a heretic.
Pelagius tells Demetrias that her vow of virginity does not exempt her from the fullness of demands of the Christian life; he warns her not to be deceived by those who adopt chastity "not along with righteousness but in its place" (10:2).

 Brief History of the GOC.html
n June 1937, the President of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan Germanos of Demetrias, joined Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Florina in declaring (contrary to the Encyclical of 1935) that the New Calendarists were not actually schismatic, but only "potentially" schismatic, and that their Mysteries retained sanctifying grace.
However, on 9 November, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Florina wrote a strongly worded letter to Metropolitan Germanos of the Kyklades in which he castigated Metropolitan Germanos for receiving New Calendarists by Chrismation, and again repeated his errors of June.
Because of this letter, Metropolitan Germanos of the Kyklades also severed communion with the two bishops, Metropolitans Germanos of Demetrias and Chrysostomos of Florina, and re-established communion with Bishop Matthaios.

In 194 BC the Romans showed the Aetolians they were keeping their word by removing their garrisons from Acrocorinth, Chalcis, and Demetrias.
At the same time their armies left Greece they insisted that all Roman citizens who had been enslaved (many because Rome had refused to ransom them in the war against Hannibal) in Greece be freed.
In 192 BC there were rumours that the Romans would cede Demetrias to Philip, and Flamininus, who was in Greece as a senatorial legate to try to settle affairs, would not make an overt denial (wishing to let Philip believe there was such a possibility).
