Demetrius I of Bactria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Demetrius I (reigned circa 200-180 BCE)was the son of Euthydemus and succeeded him around 200 BC, after which he conquered extensive areas in what now is eastern Iran, Pakistan, Punjab and northern India, thus creating an Indo-Greek kingdom far from Hellenistic Greece, that was to last until around 1 BC.
Demetrius I died of unknown reasons, and the date 180 BCE, is merely a suggestion aimed to allow suitable regnal periods for subsequent kings, of which there were several.
Demetrius II was a later king, possibly a son or nephew of his namesake, and he ruled in India only.

DEMETRIUS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
While still crown prince of Bactria Demetrius conducted, on behalf of his father, negotiations with the Seleucid Antiochus III in 206-05 B.C.E.; Antiochus considered Demetrius "worthy of kingship because of his distinction, conversational rapport, and capacity for leadership" and promised him one of his own daughters in marriage.
Subsequently, after the appearance in Bactria of the rival prince Eucratides around 175 B.C.E., he returned from India (Justin, 41.6, where he is described as king of India) and besieged Eucratides' small escort with an army said to have numbered 60,000; he was nevertheless outmaneuvered, defeated, and apparently slain.
Demetrius II was presumably another son of Demetrius I; he is known only from Greco-Bactrian coins with the reverse type of a standing Athena.

Demetrius II of Bactria - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Demetrius II of Bactria.
Demetrius II was probably the second son of Demetrius I. He ruled as a sub-king in Bactria, as his father was conquering the Indian territory to the East.
According to his coinage, Demetrius II probably did not live very long, and was likely assinated, as his brothers, by the usurper Eucratides, who took control of the Greco-Bactrian territory.

Demetrius I Of Bactria Encyclopedia Article, Definition, History, Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Demetrius was the name of at least two, very likely three Greek kings of Bactria and India.
Demetrius I (reigned circa 200-180 BCE)was the son of Euthydemus and succeeded him around 200 BCE, after which he conquered extensive areas in what now is eastern Iran, Pakistan, Punjab and northern India, thus creating an Indo-Greek kingdom far from Hellenistic Greece.
Unambigous Buddhist symbols are found on later Greek coins, but it seems rather unlikely that Demetrius I, who was born in the Greek milieu of Bactria and struck coins with Olympic gods, personally was a buddhist.

190 BC- 185 BCE) was probably a brother of the Greco-Bactrian king Demetrius and one of his sub-kings.
Some of his coins (as well as those of Agathocles and Euthydemus II) have another surprising characteristic: they are made of copper-nickel alloy, a technology that would not be developed in the West until the 18th century, but that was knows by the Chinese at the time.
They suggest that exchanges of the metallic alloy, or possibly exchanges of technicians, were happening at the time between China and the region of Bactria.

Apollodotus I   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Apollodotus was one of the generals of Demetrius I of Bactria, the Greco-Bactrian king who invaded northern India around 180 BCE.
Apollodotus was a contemporary of Menander I, although it seems the reign of Apollodotus preceded that of Menander, who was the general in charge of the Eastern territories during his reign.
Before their design was eventually simplified, some of the earlier coins of king Apollodotus directly associate the elephant with Buddhist symbolism, such as the stupa hill surmounted by a star, also seen, for example on the coins of the Mauryan Empire or those of the later Kuninda kingdom.

He was put in charge of the area of the Paropamisadae between Bactria and the Indian territories.
The limited size of his coinage indicate a short reign, and it seems that he died at a rather young age before being replaced by his brother Agathocles.
Some of his coins (as well as those of Agathocles) have another surprising characteristic: they are made of copper-nickel alloy, a technology that would not be developped in the West until the 18th century, but that was knows by the Chinese at the time.
