Omitting the old fashioned cannon-periers, which were obsolete by that date, and the port-pieces, the principal guns were demi-cannon (32pdr), culverin (18pdr) and demi-culverin (9pdr), and most were muzzle loaders.
The time-honoured names cannon-royal, culverin, falcon and the like were obsolete and guns were classified according to the weight of their shot.
Since the proportions of each part of a gun were based on its calibre, and that in turn was dependent on the diameter (and therefore the weight) of the shot, classification by shot weight was convenient, simple and readily understood.

To REALLY get lost in translations, look up where we got "cannon" from, the days of the fighting sails.
Ships were armed with bombards, culverin, cannon, demi-culverin, demi-cannon, and a whole bevy of names to label their shot weapons.
Somewhere along the way, it was decided that the best firepower per size/weight ratio came from the culverin and cannon weapons, and over time "cannon" came to be the common name.
