3000 Miles To Graceland - Movie Review
Demian Lichtenstein's music video-style direction wears thin after about five minutes of slow-mo and fast-mo "special effects." (Oddly enough, Lichtenstein's past credits turn out to be, you guessed it, music videos.
Sorry, Demian: You're no Guy Ritchie.) But really, I have to fault Costner for the bulk of this atrocity of a film simply for agreeing to be in it.
On a side note to Lichtenstein and any parents in the audience: Attempting to mask plot defects with loads of violence tends to amplify them rather than conceal.

Director Demian Lichtenstein assumes that a film can be thoroughly entertaining with two action sequences, a terrible script, trashy dialogue and what I have termed 'chop-shock' editing.
Lichtenstein finds his peace recycling frames from Michael Bay to John Woo in regards to his action scenes.
Lichtenstein teamed with Richard Recco to script this awful story about a gang of thieves who disguise themselves as Elvis impersonators in order to rob a casino during Elvis Convention week.

During his senior year at New York University film school, Lichtenstein formed Lightstone Entertainment.
Chairman of the New York Independent Film Coalition for two years, Lichtenstein has directed, produced, written, photographed, taped and/or recorded audio on over 225 short films, music videos, commercials and concerts.
Eight years later, Lichtenstein took a stab at feature films and wrote, directed and produced Lowball, an indie-film that went largely unnoticed.

KINNOPIO - 3000 Miles to Graceland
The crude humor and awkward tension of the opening scenes do not continue, or at the very least continue in muted fashion, but they are replaced by some of the most gratuitous instances of sex and violence seen in the theater within the last five years.
Though writers Lichtenstein and Recco have some nice ideas, such as the scene where Murphy and Michael are placed in adjoining prison cells, they don't have enough of them to make a decent story.
Lichtenstein and Recco use this pick-and-choose method of scriptwriting far too often, though, and even the most persistent viewers will grow tired of their technique.

Big-screen newcomer Demian Lichtenstein's debut film feature, 3000 Miles to Graceland, is something of a triumph of style over substance.
Two of the scariest-looking scorpions you've ever seen go head to head in the wasteland, all tail and teeth, until finally the victorious one raises his claws in triumph -- providing a perfect frame for a billboard for the Elvis convention that's about to get all shook up.
Lichtenstein's music video background, evident throughout the film, prepared him well for these scenes.

Directed by DEMIAN LICHTENSTEIN from a screenplay by RICHARD RECCO and Demian Lichtenstein, the film is produced by ELIE SAMAHA ("Heist," "Angel Eyes"), Demian Lichtenstein, RICHARD SPERO ("Rhyme and Reason"), ERIC MANES (MTV's "Fear") and ANDREW STEVENS ("Heist," "Angel Eyes").
Though Lichtenstein always envisioned Costner playing Michael, the hero of the piece, and Kurt Russell portraying the villain, Murphy, the actors had a different response: Costner was drawn to the bad guy.
Lichtenstein paid homage to this connection by staging a scene during the heist in which Russell's Michael signs autographs for a few Elvis fans - one of whom presents him with the vintage soundtrack album from "It Happened At The World's Fair."

In any case, Demian Lichtenstein's movie, which the director co-wrote with Richard Recco, misses an opportunity to explore much of the Elvis phenomemon but rather takes the curiosity for what it is and delves into one result of this national obsession with the rock 'n' roll performer.
To justify the mayhem, Lichtenstein has created one Murphy--perhaps the most heartless villain of recent cinema, a guy who thinks nothing of plotting the cold-blooded murder of an 11-year-old boy.
In the most wicked role of his career, Kevin Costner is loyal to no one and thinks nothing of double-crossing his entire team of brigands including Michael, with whom he had recently spent several years in prison as a cellmate.

Demian Lichtenstein's 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND isn't the movie that you've seen in the trailers, which is a shame.
The busy script by Richard Recco and Demian Lichtenstein has more holes than the proverbial Swiss cheese.
The script attempts to fill all of the holes with lots of shoot-'em-ups.

Directed by Demian Lichtenstein (who is, of course, a music video director), the film fails to maintain a consistent tone or clarity.
Lichtenstein seems mainly interested in copying some of his favorite shots from other, better movies.
The Elvis theme goes down the tubes and fails to make good use of Russell, who played the King in a 1979 movie, or Slater, who had him as a mentor in True Romance (1993).

Two years after Lichtenstein's low budget 1997 debut, ''Lowball,'' went nowhere, then business partner Lynn Oddo picked ''Graceland'' from his trove of more than 20 unproduced screenplays and told the native New Yorker, This one will make you a star -- if you go Hollywood.
A more interesting drama may have played out after shooting ended: Costner has said that he and Russell disagreed about the editing, with Costner supporting the director.
One producer confirms the stars had separate visions but insists they collaborated on the edit with Lichtenstein.

JoBlo reviews the movie "3000 Miles to Graceland"
Do not go into this movie thinking that the climax is the cool Elvis robbers ripping off the glitzy casino.
I guess Lichtenstein thought that premise was way too clever and original to continue past the first half-hour of the film.
There is still plenty of action the rest of the way -- but it is mostly sporadic, plain-clothes, dirt road and warehouse-type action.
