demiurg (warhammer 40,000) - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
In the tabletop miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000 Battlefleet Gothic, The Demiurg are a race of squat semi-humanoids, with notable traits shared with the typical Dwarf stereotype.
The Demiurg appear to be affiliated in some way with the Tau, although we will wait and see if Games Workshop will decide to transfer the Demiurg concept to the 40k line itself, or whether they will be left as a background race and for the specialist games like Battlefleet Gothic.
It is assumed that the Demiurg are the attempt to re-address the 'space dwarf' image that has not been present since the Squat race that was removed from the game for reasons of the company.

Warhammer 40,000 (informally known as "Warhammer 40K") is a tabletop miniature wargame, produced by the British gaming company Games Workshop.
The Warhammer 40,000 gameworld is most readily characterized as a gothic science-fantasy setting.
The central and most popular elements of the Warhammer 40k universe are the Space Marines, futuristic versions of fantasy knights and the finest warriors of the Imperium of Mankind, a dystopian and degenerate galaxy-spanning civilization.

The Demiurg are known to have an 'allied' relationship with the Tau, being noted as economic relations of the Tau Empire, and were initially introduced to the Tau via their mutual relations with the Kroot.
It is possible that the Demiurg are an attempt to reintroduce a race of 'space dwarves' to the Warhammer 40,000 universe, a concept which has not been present since the Squats were removed from the game.

In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000, the Squats were a race which were descended from humans who colonized the high gravity worlds at the centre of the galaxy.
The Squats were the equivalents of Dwarves for the Warhammer 40,000 universe much in the same way as the Eldar serve as Elves and Orks bear a striking resemblance to Warhammer Fantasy Orcs.
Jervis Johnson's statement also confirms that the Demiurg began as an effort to re-think the concept of Squats, after their decimation, and that that concept might one day be expanded on.

It is frequently suggested (and often assumed) that the Demiurg are the attempt to reintroduce the Squat race that was removed from the game for reasons of the company, but it would be better understood as an attempt to reintroduce the 'space dwarf' image that has not been present in the game since the removal.

In the universe of Games Workshop's table-top wargame Warhammer 40,000, the Tau are an alien race, inhabiting a small but dense region of space on the eastern edge of the Milky Way Galaxy, roughly 300 light years in diameter.
Unlike most of the races in Warhammer 40,000, which were developed from a comparable race in Warhammer Fantasy Battle, the Tau are one of only two playable races that do not possess an analogue in the Fantasy fictional universe.
The Warhammer 40,000 Design Team selected the Tau as one of two new race ideas from hundreds of possible concepts (The Kroot were the other, and the two were eventually combined into the one fictional organisation).

Originally, the demiurge was described as a divine entity in the works of Plato circa 360BC, but later in Gnosticism the term refers to the evil creator god of the material world.
For Plato, the demiurge is a creator (of the laws or the heaven) or the creator (of the World) in Timaeus.
In Gnosticism, the material universe is seen as evil, and the demiurge is the evil creator of the physical world.

In the table-top wargame Warhammer 40,000, the Tau are a relatively benevolent race fighting for what they call the Greater Good.
A common tactic is to engage the enemy at the maximum range of their weapons, which typically have a longer range and greater firepower than the equivalent weapons in the other armies.
It is not uncommon for younger Warhammer players to comment on Marathon-inspired works, confused why the supposed Tau symbol would be used in a piece of art, for they are ignorant of which was the original.

In my mind what makes the suspension of disbelief so easy for Warhammer 40,000 is that its a world I have known since I was knee-high to a grasshopper; there's a wealth of readily available information in the universe and best of all, it feels like its grounded in some kind of real-world historical backdrop.
The goal of the background to Warhammer 40,000 was to create a universe ideal for a wargame.
