The demoscene is a computer subculture that came to prominence during the rise of the 16 bit micros (the Atari ST and the Amiga), but demos first appeared during the 8-bit era on computers such as the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum.
Demo writers went to great lengths to get every last ounce of performance out of their target machine.
Where games/application writers were concerned with stability/functionality of their software, the demo writer was typically interested in how many CPU cycles a routine would consume and how best to squeeze as much effects and activity onto the screen.

Pilgrimage: What Is The Demo Scene?
The demo scene revolves around the creation and appreciation of "demos"--digital multimedia art generated in real-time from a program executing on a computer.
At this point the intros became "demos", a demonstration of the skills of the people that had created it, and a new art form was born.
New demos are often released in a compo at a demoparty.

A dentro is a mixture of the characteristics of a '(DE)mo' and an 'i(NTRO)'.
Since most demo coders are usually still busy with their education (read: students) they cannot afford the lastet buzz from the hardware market.
This might be due to the fact, that the demoscene, in contrast to the 'hacker' and warez scene is unknown to a wider public audience and totally legal (and hence not 'thrilling' enough), decreasing a publishers' intrest to 'close to zero'.

 Demoscene at AllExperts
Demos in the demoscene sense began as software crackers' "signatures", that is, crack screens and crack intros attached to software whose copy protection was removed.
Although demos are still a more or less obscure form of art even in the traditionally active demoscene countries, the scene has had an impact on areas such as computer games industry and new media art.
Sometimes demos even provide direct influence even to game developers that have no demoscene affiliation: for instance, Will Wright names demoscene as a major influence on the new Maxis game Spore, which is largely based on procedural content generation and is being programmed by many demoscene veterans.

Computer Demos - The Story So Far
Demos are conventionally programmed in assembler, but nowadays C and C++ are also popular, and only the most time-critical parts of the demos are programmed in hand-optimized assembler.
Major demo parties have few percent of female visitors, but most these women are girlfriends of male demo scene members or local girls who just wandered there, because of free entrance.
So far the demo scene hasn't evolved from concentrating on technical excellence instead of content and maybe this is one of reasons why the demo is slowly dying away.

Demos are very close to music videos beside the fact that (in most cases) the CODE is the most important thing and not the music.
However, you don't have to actually create in order to be a demo scener, though that's how people gain their 'fame' inside the scene so even if you don't do anything when you got inside at first, you'll get the urge to do so.
Demo sceners were enjoying a feeling of superiority towards the Game Development industry for still doing simple-hardly-exciting games while they already had 3D Engines, shading effects and running it all smoothly in real-time.

Demos are the last bastion of passionate, crazed, enthusiast-only programming, crafted purely for the hell of it by inspired teenagers working entirely in their spare time.
The demo scene is driven by competition, visible at its best in huge three- to five-day demo parties, which take place during the school holidays in mainland Europe.
Historically, demo origins can be traced to early 8-bit home micros like the Commodore 64 and Apple II, but demos (and their corresponding culture) really took off when Commodore's 16-bit Amiga hit the market in 1985, with its hi-res graphics, 4,000-color palette, powerful video handling, and four-channel digitized sound.

The scene is an aspect of a wider information technology related cultural environment which has it's origins with the beginnings of the automation of national and international telecommunications, and is characterised by an impetus among its adherents towards the discovery and exploitation of features available within the technological environment which are not publicly documented.
Scene diskzine publications such as Eurochart, differentiate in their voting between single part demos which load the complete program into RAM prior to playback, and multi-load demos which continue to load segments during the demo presentation which can last for more than half an hour of continually changing program content.
The demo as a means of posturing for status within a social structure in terms of stratification within the subculture is also worthy of noting as a factor in the motivation of individual and group effort.
