Chinese democracy movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The movement began during Beijing Spring in 1978 and was important in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.
In the 1990s, the movement underwent a sharp decline both within China and overseas, and is currently fragmented and not considered by most analysts to be a serious threat to power to the Chinese government.
Ideologically, the government's first reaction to the democracy movement was a rather unconvincing effort to focus on the personal behavior of individual dissidents and argue that they were tools of foreign powers.

Democracy Movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Democracy Movement is a crossparty Eurosceptic pressure group in the UK with around 150 local branches.
The movement claims that far from being a 'tidying up exercise' of existing treaties and powers as the government claims, the Constitution represents a fundamental change in the nature of the EU and a significant increase in the centralisation of decision-making power in Brussels.
The Democracy Movement calls for the dismantling of the EU and its replacement with a new flexible and voluntary form of co-operation between European governments, called the 'Europe of Democracies'.

 The Pro-Democracy Movement in ICANN
The pro-democracy movement consisted largely of "outsiders." Here were many Internet user groups, free speech organizations, and a number of distinguished individuals in the technology and policy community, all loosely joined together in opposition to what they saw as a takeover of the Internet by special interests.
Democracy in ICANN was reduced to a mere formality of the bylaws, as the board and staff were appointed through back room deals between powerful interests.
In this case the formation of a movement and that movement's use of Internet technology were not conceptually distinct, because it was a movement of Internet users.

The word democracy comes from a golden era in ancient Greece in which the demos (which translates as the people) were directly involved in the fundamental running of the government.
I would argue that it is this ability to stand alongside others in your community, town or city and experience the miraculous ability of dialog, coupled with the weight of autonomous authority, that speaks to the inherent desire for freedom and cooperation in society that we all posses.
What we are fighting for is a global network of directly democratic communities, where freedom and autonomy are guiding principals and where the absence of hierarchy and domination allows each individual to explore her or his full potential as a positive agent in the evolutionary process.

 ZNet |China | Hong-Kong's Democracy Movement
It was meant to provide some wider analysis on the mainstream democracy movement in Hong Kong that was particularly active and visible between 2002 and 2004, specifically on the character of this movement given the presence of US elite involvement.
Hong Kong's democracy marches have also received extensive and glowing coverage in the same US corporate media that ignores its own domestic popular movements or refuses to cover them with any favourable regard.
The class position, conscious or not, of the mainstream ‘pro-democracy’ groups in HK is particularly important to consider since the movement for democracy has thus far been a top-heavy one: demonstrations are organized by leading organizations, people attend, then go home to await the next mobilization.

World Movement for Democracy – Made in the USA by Tom Barry
The "world's democratic movement" is not another one of the transnational citizens' movements, like the anti-globalization or anti-war movements, that prides itself on having no central structure, no dogma, or even an office.
Just as the citizens' global anti-globalization movement often described itself as a "movement of movements," NED describes the World Movement for Democracy as a "network of networks," that functions as an umbrella organization for an array of affiliated international networks of citizens' groups, parliamentarians, research institutions, business groups, and foundations.
NED and the World Movement for Democracy are also promoters of the Community of Democracies – which has been greeted with widespread skepticism by many European nations who regard it as a U.S. strategy to skirt UN authority.
