Split by the outbreak of World War I, it was re-formed in 1923 (as the Labour and Socialist International), and reconstituted again (in its present form) after World War II (during which many socialist parties had been suppressed in Nazi-occupied Europe).
The Party of European Socialists, a European political party active in the European Parliament, is an associated organization of the Socialist International.
As of 2006, George Papandreou, leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, is the president of the Socialist International.

The evolution of the party, during this era, is an integral part of the decline of the Weimar State.
By 1923, the Nazi party and the SA stormtroopers were considered almost one and the same with the first Nazi paramilitary ranks, those being the ranks and insignia of the Sturmabteilung, in use.
As Germany expanded its territory and began conquering other countries, the Nazi Party began establishing dictatorial regimes to replace the fallen governments, all of which were controlled by Nazi appointed puppet leaders with the exception of France which was run by a military government under the control of the Wehrmacht.
