In particular, the outbreak of armed conflict by ethnic-Albanian militants in February 2001 stemmed from perceived domination of the political process by ethnic-Slavs.
In those elections, support for the nationalist parties declined dramatically and a new coalition government was formed, led by the former communist Social Democratic Alliance for Macedonia (SDSM), the leading member of the Together for Macedonia alliance, and the Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), a party comprising the former National Liberation Army.
In June 2002, the insurgent NLA was disbanded and reformed as a legal party, the Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (BDI).

The Democratic Union for Integration (Bashkimi Demokratik për Integrim, BDI, Demokratska Unija za Integracija, DUI) is the largest political party in the Republic of Macedonia among ethnic Albanians, and the third largest political party in all of Macedonia.
From 2002 to 2006 it was part of the ruling coalition along with the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia(SDUM) and the Liberal Democratic Party.
However, since their Macedonian governmental partner the SDUM lost the election, DUI were not invited by the new Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski to participate in the new government, although it was again for the second time the largest party among the Albanian electorate in Macedonia.

The Democratic Union for Integration (DUI-BDI) led by Ali Ahmeti, which is a member of the present government coalition, has based its campaign on the economy, social cohesion and equal opportunities.
July in mind the Democratic Union for Integration has formed a coalition with the Democratic Bosnian League (DLB) led by Rafet Muminovic and the Democratic Prosperity Party (PPD-PDP) led by Abduladi Veiseli.

The former consists of the main opposition party, the Social Democratic Alliance of Macedonia (SDAM), the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and three minor parties representing the smaller ethnic groups, the Bosniacs, Roma, and Vlachs.

The Liberal Democratic Party was launched in April 1997 as a merger between the Liberal Party and the Democratic Party.
The first leader of the LDP was Petar Goshev from the Democrats, who was also the last president of the League of Communists of Macedonia.
Information about the Liberal Democratic Party’s performance in the last parliamentary elections, held on July 5, 2006, is not currently available, but because the Social Democratic Union was defeated, it is unlikely that the Liberal Democratic Party will remain in the government.

Among the Albanians, who make up a third of Macedonia's 2 million inhabitants, the clear winner was the Democratic Union for Integration led by Ali Ahmeti, who supports ethnic reconciliation.
Early results showed Ahmeti's party obtaining around 30 seats, dwarfing its main rival, the Democratic Party for Albanians -- a partner in the governing coalition -- which shrank from 11 seats to two.
