Topic: Reform Democrat

Reform Democrat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reform Democrats in the United States are members of the Democratic Party who are opposed to the Democratic political machines of their respective cities, counties, or states or to analogous machine politics at a national level.
Reform Democrats are generally associated with the good government traditions that arose out of the progressive movement of the early 20th century, and are usually, but not always, on the left wing of the Democratic Party.
The lines between anti-machine Reform Democrats and pro-machine Regular Democrats are not always clear: often, once reformers achieve office they often take advantage of patronage to establish a machine in their own right.

European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (founded in 1993) is a liberal party, mainly active in the European Union, composed of 49 national liberal and centrist parties from across Europe.
The Party is politically represented in the European Parliament by the ALDE Group, formed in conjunction with the centrist European Democratic Party, which is dominated by ELDR MEPs and led by Graham Watson, a British Liberal Democrat and former leader of the separate ELDR Parliamentary Group.
It originated as the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform party grouping with seats in the European Parliament, but on April 30, 2004 (the day before the enlargement of the European Union) reformed itself as a pan-European political party, although it has yet to organise itself at a grassroots level.

 GregsOpinion.com: A Reform Primer
The bottom line for Democrats, however, is the acceptance of the fact that you can listen to Dems debate reform when we're in the majority, or you can let the other side take over and ramrod their version over your cold, dead body.
Worth the Fighting For by John McCain is a more obtuse read in that it's not 100% pertinent to a reform agenda for politics, but the tales told are a good narrative of a reformer from the other side.
That's when the support for Democrat X is a problem--when it doesn't allow you to support another Democrat who might disagree on a couple of issues.

As the center of gravity in the House Democratic Caucus has moved continuously leftward since 1974, Gephardt, as their leader, had little choice but to move leftward himself.
The Bradley-Gephardt plan was important because, historically, Democrats had used the idea of "tax reform" as nothing but a code word for soaking the rich.

In this respect, one of his most important achievements in Congress was to co-author the Bradley- Gephardt tax reform plan in the early 1980s.

Dean's World: The Real Face of Campaign Finance "Reform"
Democrats, supposedly the party of the "little guy," are infinitely more dependent on the deep pockets of multibillionaires like George Soros just to keep them afloat.
The argument for finance reform is that if every party had (basically) the same amount of money to spend on their campaign, the only thing to differentiate them would be their actual ideas.
But CF reform is the one that that you can bet they will fight tooth and nail to prevent or pass half measures designed to placte the masses but really give one party and advantage over the other like McCain - Feingold, which I admitted is a bad law.

"Campaign Finance reform absolutely needs to happen, but aren't there enough prohibitions against third party candidates already?" asked Luck, Wisconsin's Mike Miles, a member of the Green Party, as well as part of a Catholic Worker community who founded a center for the study of nonviolence and sustainable living.
He added that if the Democrat was the incumbent, then the Republican candidate would need to raise the same number of signatures as any third party candidate in order to qualify for full funding.
And while third parties such as the Libertarians and Greens have a vested interest in these and other campaign finance reforms, without members of their own in Congress, they will continue to be at the mercy of Democrats and Republicans when it comes to shaping those reforms on the Federal level.

Press Release - New Report Warns Senate Democrat Pension Reform Plan Too Weak to Protect American Workers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
As a result, the proposed Senate Democrat pension reform bill would leave most American workers in virtually the same condition they’re in now - with no access to high quality, professional investment advice about their pensions and 401(k) accounts.
A pension reform package sketched out by Senate Democrat leaders shortly before the August break would mirror bipartisan pension protection legislation passed by the House in most respects - but with at least one potentially fatal flaw.
The proposed Senate Democrat bill would gut a provision, passed twice by the House this year with significant bipartisan support and endorsed by President Bush, that would enable millions of rank-and-file workers to gain access to professional investment advice that could have helped workers at Enron and WorldCom protect their 401(k) accounts.
