Demogorgon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Demogorgon, although often ascribed to Greek mythology, is actually an invention of Christian scholars, imagined as the name of a pagan god or demon, associated with the underworld and envisaged as a powerful primordial being, whose very name had been taboo.
By the late Middle Ages, nevertheless, the reality of a primal creative pagan "Demogorgon" was so well fixed in the European imagination that "Demogorgon's son Pan" became a bizarre variant reading for "Hermes' son Pan" in one manuscript tradition of Boccaccio's Genealogie Deorum ("Genealogies of the Gods":1.3-4 and 2.1), misreading a line in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Demogorgon's name was earlier invoked by Faustus in Scene III of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus (1590) when the eponymous Doctor summons Mephistopheles with a Latin incantation.

Demogorgon, in vanilla NetHack, is neither randomly generated nor guaranteed: he has to be summoned.
That way, if Demogorgon is initially on the stairs when you come back down, he may move off more quickly (there are some oddities about teleporting monsters); at the very least, all the Elbereth-respecting critters around the stairs will stay out of your way.
If you can pick the place you confront Demogorgon, you might consider deliberately placing yourself near a hole, trapdoor, or level-teleport trap (if you don't have the Amulet or magic resistance), though beware that he might use the same means of escape to get away from you.

 THESIS: Chapter 2
Though Demogorgon bids Asia ask what she "dar'st," his responses to her questions actually mimic what she herself believes are the correct answers, leading her to realize, "So much I asked before, and my heart gave / The response thou hast given; and of such truths / Each to itself must be the oracle" (II.iv.121-23).
