Quiet Revolution - Quebec History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Quiet Revolution is the name given to a period of Quebec history extending from 1960 to 1966 and corresponding to the tenure of office of the Liberal Party of Jean Lesage.
Quebec, under the Duplessis era, was supposed to be characterised by traditionalism, conservatism and, generally, a rejection of contemporary ways and values.
In this respect, Quebec entered resolutely into a phase of modernisation: its outlook became more secular (as opposed to religious), much of the traditionalism that characterised the past was replaced by increasingly liberal attitudes; long standing demographic tendencies, associated with a traditional rural way of life (high marriage, birth and fertility rates), were rapidly reversed.

The History of the Family--Volume 4 Issue 4
The authors explore relationships between demographic trends and the public discourse around reproduction in the province at the turn of the 20th century.
They identify a shift in the public discussion of fertility in Quebec during World War I. At this point, pride in and celebration of Quebec's large families was superceded in the dominant, nationalist discourse by anxiety about diminished rates of reproduction and natalist exhortations to women who might be tempted to restrict their fertility.
Demographic and economic differences between Victorian Canada and the United States, however, produced distinctions in Canadian and American women's life course transitions and household status: for Canadian women, older ages at first marriage, and the prolongation of the duration of the status -- spouse of the household head.

Hamelin had published in political and economic history, in labour history, in the history of the press, in religious history, and was later to publish a controversial history of Laval University (Hamelin 1995).
While Quebec historiography in general has undergone an efflorescence during that period, and cultural and ethnic studies as well as political history were added to more established themes such as the history of ideologies, feminist history, and social history in its multifaceted aspects, economic history actually declined as a field of scholarly production.

In 1971, he launched an ambitious study of cultural and demographic patterns among the residents of the Saguenay, a study that is the cornerstone of the renowned BALSAC database.
For curious Quebecers searching through the branches of their family tree, these are the types of questions that come to mind.
Eventually, BALSAC could be used to trace four centuries of demographic change among residents of New France in Quebec, and then to track migration to Ontario, Western Canada, and New England.

The creation of Lower Canada (now Quebec) and Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1791 emphasized the inequalities between anglophones and francophones, as the French-speaking majority in Lower Canada were ruled by an assembly of francophone priests and seigneurs who had to answer to a British governor appointed in London.
Rebellions against this hierarchy by the French Patriotes in 1837 led to an investigation by Lord Durham, who concluded that English and French relations were akin to "two nations warring within the bosom of a single state".
Another referendum in 1994 was held where the province opted to remain a part of Canada by a margin of under one percent (50.6% to 49.4%).
