 Greater Caribbean Survey 2004
The continental countries of Central and South America have experienced very strong demographic growth and have been the major contributors to population growth in the area: the thirteen states from Mexico to French Guiana have almost quadrupled (+ 279%) their populations from 55 million to almost 210 million persons.
Demographic transition is under way or in the final stages in the greater Caribbean except for Haiti which combines one of the highest birth rates with the highest general and infant mortality rates.
The other characteristic of the demographic transition in the region, apart from its recentness, has been its swiftness: it will probably take less than a century, while it took from 10 to 150 years to reach completion in most developed countries.

 Edward Hugh Research
The Swedish demographer Bo Malmberg has proposed a four-phase typology of the demographic transition which may be considered to be  a useful contribution to our  understanding of  the age structure impacts of the  ongoing processes of social and economic evolution which accompany the demographic transition (Malmberg and Sommestad, 2000).
The modern demographic transition has, of course, had a substantial influence on both  population-size and population growth-rates over the last  two centuries, and it is probably this aspect of the transition more than any other which  has grabbed the  popular attention, at least until very recent times.
Simply stated, the demographic dividend occurs when a fall in the  birth rate following an initial mortality decline produces changes in the age distribution of a society, and these changes mean that fewer investments are required  to meet the needs of the youngest age groups.
