New Caledonia is also allowed to engage in international cooperation with independent countries of the Pacific Ocean.

However, right-wing and left-wing politicians, including Chirac, who is planning to fly to New Caledonia soon, agreed that the political, economic and social cleavages in the territory cannot be smoothed out unless the French government adopts an open attitude to reconcile the opposing factions.
The French government has indicated it plans to reorganize the four regional administrations in New Caledonia, three of which are in the hands of independence leaders, in accordance with the referendum results.
