Cook went ashore on Tuesday 11 October 1774, and was impressed with the tall straight trees and flax-like plants.
The vegetation of Philip Island was devastated due to the introduction of pest animals such as pigs and rabbits, giving it a red-brown colour as viewed from Norfolk; however, pest control and remediation work by park staff has recently brought some improvement to the Philip Island environment.
The population of Norfolk Island was estimated in July 2003 to be 1,853, with an annual population growth rate of 0.01%.

Lieutenant James Cook subsequently called the archipelago New Zealand, although the names he chose for the North and South islands were rejected, and the main three islands became known as North, Middle and South, with the Middle Island being later called the South Island.
Cook began extensive surveys of the islands in 1769, leading to European whaling expeditions and eventually significant European colonisation.
The South Island is the largest land mass, and is divided along its length by the Southern Alps, the highest peak of which is Aoraki/Mount Cook, at 3,754 metres (12,316 feet).

In this study, we are examining seasonal distribution and abundance patterns of sandlance in Cook Inlet and Gulf of Alaska, spawning biology and behavior, growth and energetics, larval emergence and offshore distribution, and population genetics.
Populations of seabirds in lower Cook Inlet fluctuate over time, and changes in population size reflect the sum of three processes: adult mortality, recruitment of locally-produced offspring, and the immigration/emigration of breeding adults from/to other colonies.
We are studying SSF and predators using similar methods employed in the Cook Inlet Seabird and Forage Fish project, including hydroacoustic surveys, trawls, and seines to study SSF, and pelagic surveys to assess the abundance and distribution of marine predators.
