The European Union was formally established when the Maastricht Treaty came into force on 1 November 1993 and in 1995 Austria, Sweden and Finland joined the newly established Union.
The European Union's competence in the justice and home affairs area originates from the signing of the Schengen Agreement in 1985 on the gradual abolition of border controls between six of the then ten European Community member states.

To my mind, it would be more fruitful to end the codas to Europe, acknowledge that it no longer has a significant independent role to play in the world, and pay more attention to the sort of world these three large nations envision and what role they aspire to play in the new international order.
His criticisms of the United Nations are particularly cogent, as is his explanation of how the European media shoulders much of the blame for the current spasm of anti-Americanism that afflicts the continent.
While the demographics of it are interesting, how the increasing diversity of a country forces it to change its identity is perhaps rather more interesting in my opinion.
