Articles - Demoscene   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A demoparty is an event which gathers demomakers and provides them competitions to compete in.
However, a major difference between a real demoparty and a typical LAN party is that demosceners spend more time socializing (often outside the actual party hall) than in front of their computers.
Demoparties started to appear in the 1980's in the form of copyparties where software pirates and demomakers gathered to meet each other and share their software.

As for the Pilgrimage Demo Party, it is a fully qualified and active demoparty -- certainly not something to be confused with a short-run demoshow.
Historically there have been several Russian demoparties and there is an even an active Japanese demoparty which recently took place just last month (but it is only a virtual party by way of the 2ch BBS website).
Throughout the United States/Canada there has been at least 11 documented physical demoparties ever [1], a small number in stark contrast to the approximately 70 demoparties which take place each year throughout all of Europe.

Compo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In addition to party-based contests, there have also been online compos on websites and bulletin board systems.
The main competition on most demoparties is the demo compo.
A typical party also includes an intro compo (for demos with a file size restriction), a music compo and a graphics compo.

What are demo parties?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Demoparties are events in which demo enthusiasts and other sceners meet.
The name came from the fact that they were mainly organized for the sceners to meet one another and to copy the latest wares.
The main event of a demoparty is of course the demo competition.

I know that the demoparties died somewhat, somewhere along the way, and the old trackers 'got real lives' or now while away their hours on IRC without releasing.
Demoparties give you excuses to travel to far places, to live away from the boring surrounding society for at least that one weekend.
Demoscene is not just about going to demoparties, it's also mainly about the new-media art and the artists that have been working hard for the past week to release something in the compos.

Comment : This individual continuously receives awards for his music at demoparties, effectively the analagous equivalent to film festivals but focused on electronically-created animations, graphics and music.
It's definitely worth noting that in the last 3 music competitions that paniq entered in 2004 (that I've discovered so far), he received 1st place each and every time.
High notability in the demoscene is usually accompanied by top placement in various competitions on large demoparties (placement is democratic as well, the audience votes the winner) and high activity over a longer period of time.

Of course demoparty organisers DO set a filesize limit for them as well, currently between 10 and 20mb.
The main purpose is to inform sceners about an upcoming demoscene party, when and where it will take place, what compos can be expected, entrance fee etc. Unlike normal intros (see [2.4.]), an invitation intro is usually not limited to a certain filesize.
