The Dempster Highway, also referred to as Yukon Highway 5 and Northwest Territories Highway 8, is a highway that connects the Klondike Highway in the Yukon Territory of Canada to Inuvik, Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River delta.
During the winter months, the highway extends another 194 kilometres to Tuktoyaktuk, on the northern coast of Canada, using frozen portions of the Mackenzie River delta as an ice road.
It was unveiled as a two-lane, gravel-surfaced, all-weather highway that ran 671 kilometres (417 miles) from the Klondike Highway near Dawson City to Fort McPherson and Arctic Red River in the Northwest Territories.

The road was billed as the first-ever overland supply link to southern Canada, where business and political circles buzzed with talk of an oil pipeline that would run parallel to the road.

Promoted to Sergeant for this feat, Jack Dempster was to cross and recross the trail that has now become the Dempster Highway during his remaining years of service before retiring to British Columbia in 1934.
The road which bears his name was the first all-weather road to cross the Arctic Circle and was originally to be called the Aklavik Highway till a campaign to commemorate Jack Dempster and his feat of endurance was launched in the early 1960s by the "Yukon Order of Pioneers".
The highway was named after him in September 1963, and was officially opened in 1979 with the unveiling of a memorial plaque by his children, Professor Hugh Dempster and Mrs Sheila Calvert.

At Dempster's Corner we got gas and ate burgers and met a couple who worked at the lodge there but lived in Inuvik (inn-oo-vick).
The gravel is very sharp and interlocking and is designed to freeze together into a hard surface and not sink into the permafrost, and doing 60 MPH is easy on it.
This was a much smaller highway and we saw lots of Caribou and a few moose.
