Here are the responses to my request: Noelle: I use denatured alcohol with no problems, but it all depends on how it was denatured as there are different ways and I have had a bad experience with one.
If you get lucky, the container actually tells you what is in these alcohols, often a mixture of methanol, ethyl alcohol, and maybe some isopropyl, or maybe someone will be able to give the info via H'net so you can compare and use if it is comparable to "reagent alcohol".
If it is absolute (100%) denatured alcohol, you might want to dilute it, and use it as 95% denatured alcohol, just in case it has absorbed water, or is not as pure as it should be.

Methanol is also known as wood alcohol and works well if you can get it cheaper.
...That we use in the taxidermy business is mostly methyl alcohol(methanol) not the denatured form of ethanol(ethyl or grain alcohol) that's the alcohol of "adult beverages".

If memory serves me correctly, denaturants added to ethanol are very bad tasting compounds that cannot be tolerated by humans (makes them very nauseated, tasts awful or some other reason a person couldn't get it down or keep it down).
Denaturant is required by law such that the denatured ethanol will not be used as an intoxicating beverage -- and thus, carries a lower tax rate and is sold for non-food or drinking purposes.
