The Dendrocolaptidae, the woodcreepers, are part of an endemic Neotropical group of birds known as the tracheophone suboscines.
Although the Dendrocolaptidae are variable in body size, with a total length ranging from 13 cm to 36 cm, most members of the family share a rather uniform body form and plumage coloration.
The Dendrocolaptidae, taken as a whole, breed in every month of the year, with year-round breeding likely to be the rule when considering the entire ranges of widespread species such as the Plain-brown, Wedge-billed and Olivaceous Woodcreepers.

 Xiphorhynchus Striatigularis (Dendrocolaptidae): Nomen Monstrositatum
Given the propensity for the species of Dendrocolaptidae in the lowlands of northeastern Mexico to be morphologically distinct, and under the assumptions upon which the study was based, X. striatigularis is not a valid species.
If X. striatigularis is an aberrant individual of a valid species and the aberrancy is restricted to pig- ment deposition in the plumage (the latter is the basis for this taxon; Richmond 1899), its external morpho- metrics should match one of the species occurring in the region.
Diagnosis of this unique type is aided by the fact that southern Tamaulipas is near the northerly limits of the Dendrocolaptidae, and only two species (of two genera) currently occur in the region where the unique type was taken: X. fiavigaster and Lepidocolaptes affinis.

Body Pterylosis of Woodcreepers and Ovenbirds (Dendrocolaptidae and Furnariidae)
The Dendrocolaptidae have been separated from the Furnariidae on the basis of additional syringeal features, particularly the horns on the processi vocales of woodcreepers that are lack- ing in all ovenbirds except Geositta.
More tradition- ally, the separate familial status has rested on the different shapes of the nares--holorhinal (rounded) in dendrocolaptids, pseudoschizorhinal (slitlike) in furnariids--as well as on several characters in the feet and on plumage patterns, especially wing stripes.
Most importantly, the Dendrocolaptidae have a unique configuration in the ventral tract that distinguishes them from all other Passerines.

 Merge Dendrocolaptidae and Furnariidae
See brief summary under Dendrocolaptidae at the SACC site, or see Remsen (2003) or Marantz et al.' (2003).
The controversy has two components: a trivial one on whether each group "deserves" family or subfamily rank, and an important one on whether the two groups are reciprocally monophyletic.
Of interest is that Ames (1971) long ago noted that Geositta did not have the syringeal structure that defined the rest of the Furnariidae.
