The Rainforest Habitat in Lae is presently home to a number of visiting researchers and volunteers who aim to study a number of the country’s endangered species.
Rob Small, an undergraduate student at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and a volunteer with Voluntary Services Overseas, is in the country to study the Scott’s Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus scottae) or “tenkile” as it is known in the local dialect of the Lumi people, West Sepik Province.
It is estimated that the population is now less than 200 animals, none being kept in zoos’ anywhere in the world.
