Denel Aviation, quoted by The Star and other newspapers yesterday as being the "backer" behind a new R85-million airship by The Hamilton Airship Company (THAC), said last night its involvement with the project was limited to developmental assistance.
Clarifying a statement by Denel spokesman Paul Holtzhausen in which he said no agreement existed between Denel and THAC for the final development or production of the airship, Denel Aviation's CEO Pottie Potgieter admitted last night it was concerned that readers of yesterday's report may misconstrue the nature of Denel's involvement.

Denel Aviation will initially produce parts mostly for the Boeing 747 as well as for the Boeing 767.
Denel Aviation was scaled down to become a Boeing supplier after an extensive process of audits, workgroup meetings, bidder boards and submission of proposals.

South African defence group Denel is to split the aerostructures and component manufacturing operations of its aviation division as part of a wider restructuring plan to return the company to profitability.
Denel Aviation was the only division not to make a surplus last year within its aerospace portfolio, which also includes optical supplier Eloptro, avionics unit Kentron and the Overberg test range outside Cape Town.
Denel is preparing to produce over 4,000 aluminium and sheet metal parts a month for the Boeing 737 and 747 under a nine-year deal with the Seattle airframer, and is near to signing a deal for around 80,000 components a month for Air- bus as part of a joint venture with Pretoria-based composites specialist Aerosud.

Agusta and Denel have signed a Product Supply Agreement for the A109 Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) programme as part of the offset agreements reached when South Africa announced its major arms purchases last year.
This agreement is part of the earlier LUH Main Contract signed with South Africa's defence acquisition agency, Armscor, which provided for the industrial participation of Denel Aviation in the A109 LUH program.
Denel Aviation will be involved in the integration of subsystems, manufacture, final assembly, customisation engineering and flight testing of 25 of the 30 helicopters to be delivered to Armscor for the South African Air Force.
