Armoured warfare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prior to World War 2, horse mounted Cavalry performed what is now the tank role; fast and powerful.
In all armies there was a great deal of resistance to the introduction of the tank (due to the concomitant replacement of the horse), in particular as Cavalry units were regarded as the elite and had a lot of influence within the army.
This is what the United States relies on most, which is demonstrated by their distinct lack of effective short-range, mobile air defence vehicles to accompany armoured units.

The Army is being called on to produce an aviation modernization plan on pain of being denied anything more than 25% of currently authorized funds for modifications and upgrades.
The aviation portion of the integrated project is expected to lead to a reduction in the numbers and types of aircraft the service operates, according to Lt. Rex Hayes, a Coast Guard HH-60J pilot, who is overseeing the air platform portion of the project.
The Rooivalk is also unproven, and there continues to be widespread speculation that South African President Nelson Mandela will cancel the South African Defense Force's order for the new aircraft, jeopardizing the future of the program.

 Atlas XH-1 Alpha - free-definition
The XH-1 Alpha was a prototype attack helicopter built by Atlas Aviation (now Denel Aviation) of South Africa, who used it as a concept demonstrator for the then-planned Rooivalk project.
It should be noted however that the XH-1 and Rooivalk are completely different aircraft and share no components (the Rooivalk was developed from the later XH-2 prototype).
The results were ultimately good enough to convince Atlas and the South African Air Force to go ahead with the development of a dedicated attack helicopter - the Rooivalk.
