The Bateleur (named for an African eagle) is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) prototype designed and built by Denel Aerospace Systems (formerly Kentron).
Initially, proposed payloads include the Denel Optronics Argos-410 electro-optical (E/O) and infrared (IR) system (with optional laser rangefinder), the Denel Optronics Goshawk-350 E/O and IR system (also with optional laser rangefinder), a laser designator, an Avitronics Emitter Locating System, electronic intelligence equipment, and/or a synthetic aperture radar.

Denel however does not see the resolution of this matter as one to be found in litigation and continues to seek an opportunity to resolve the matter amicably.
Denel's strategy is aimed to focus on the manufacture and supply of specialised sub-systems and key components to major global prime contractors in the aerospace and defence-related fields.
Denel is grateful to the South African Government for its constructive support in resolving this complex problem that was a legacy of the past.

During an interview with the author, the manager of the Bateleur programme said that the reason for looking into the Subaru engine was inspired by the fact that these engines had started to be popular in home-built aircraft circles, particularly in Australia.
Asked about the airworthiness certificate, the Denel official said that, in a first stage in any case, the aircraft would be flying in a restricted airspace environment.
Denel Aviation is currently working on the possibility of adapting the Subaru 1800 cc EA-2T car flat-four to power its new Bateleur male (see title phtograph).

 Eskom, Transnet buy arivia.kom stake
According to defence group Denel's spokesperson Priya Pillay, the other shareholders in arivia.kom (Transnet and Eskom) exercised their pre-emptive rights as per the shareholders' agreement, through a share buyback by arivia.kom in terms of Section 85 of the Companies Act, 1973.
Loss-makers Denel and Transnet, on the other hand, have greater liquidity requirements and need to strengthen their cash positions to deal with balance sheet difficulties.
Meanwhile, speculation is also rife that Denel's need for an urgent cash injection prompted government to shift the stake in the hands of the other two shareholders, dashing hopes that the equity could go to an empowerment partner for arivia.kom.

It has been designed as a MALE (Medium-Altitude - Long Endurance) UAV, with its primary role being surveillance, and is expected to be production-ready in early 2006.
Though at present it has a maximum "action radius" of only 750 km (469 miles), a satellite datalink is being developed which will allow the Bateleur to extend its range greatly, making it suitable for missions requiring longer ranges such as maritime patrol.
